I graduated undergrad knowing I wanted to become a physician… but I definitely did NOT have my entire medical school application figured out yet.
And honestly, I’m glad I didn’t.
After graduation, I kept asking myself, “What can I do next that will help me grow?”
That led me to getting more healthcare experience in both a clinic and a hospital. I started coaching volleyball, which gave me an entirely different kind of experience with leadership, communication, and working with people. And eventually, I decided to pursue my master’s in anatomy.
None of those things happened because I was trying to create the “perfect” premed application.
I was just trying to figure out what made sense for me at each stage of my journey.
I think sometimes premeds get so caught up in whether they’re doing enough that they forget there isn’t one exact formula for getting into medical school.
Your path might include a gap year.
It might include a master’s.
It might include working.
It might include coaching, volunteering, research, or something completely different.
What matters is that you’re growing, learning, and building a story that actually feels like YOU.
So if you’re looking at your application right now thinking, “I still have so much to do,” take a breath.
You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You just need to figure out what your next step is.
