Webb School of Construction (DEWSC) to facilitate a holistic approach to addressing these needs. A new program in Construction Engineering was recently added to complement the two existing programs. Ira A. Fulton, whose name and legacy are woven into the story of our school and the lives of generations of students, died Friday, Aug. 21, 2026. He was 94.

Beyond being a benefactor, Ira was a familiar presence at engineering orientations, research symposiums and convocation ceremonies. He came because he wanted to meet our students, hear what they were building and understand what they hoped to accomplish.

Born and raised in Tempe, Ira came to this campus in 1950 on a football scholarship. It was here that he met Mary Lou Henson, whom he married in 1954. Together, Ira and Mary Lou gave more than $300 million to causes they believed in, including more than $160 million to Arizona State University. Their extraordinary partnership with ASU led to the naming of both the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation.

Ira’s 2003 endowment to what was then ASU’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences expanded what we believed was possible and helped open the doors of engineering and technology education to tens of thousands of students.

“I cannot think of a better investment than education,” Ira once said.
Generations of engineers, technologists and innovators are evidence of that investment and part of his enduring legacy.

🎉 ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment congratulates Avery Brewer, who is among the nine Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering doctoral students named Achievement Rewards for College Scientists, or ARCS, Scholars in recognition of ambitious research with the potential for real-world impact.

Brewer, who is pursuing her doctorate in civil, environmental and sustainable engineering, received a scholarship to support her research on how microbial processes can address economic pitfalls by turning waste from food and mining processes into resources.

Through the ARCS Foundation, Inc. Phoenix Chapter and generous donors, each of the 24 Arizona State University scholars receives supportive funding, giving graduate researchers flexibility and time to advance experiments, build prototypes, present their work and pursue professional development opportunities. https://ow.ly/xAwZ50ZEYN7 🎉 🎓🔬

See how Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering Fulton Professor of Hydrosystems Engineering Enrique Vivoni and other researchers with the ASU Center for Hydrologic Innovations use data from observation sites around the Valley to see what works to cool cities.

Their research shows how irrigated landscapes respond as temperatures and seasons change , giving researchers, policymakers and communities a clearer picture of what works.

“Phoenix is America’s hottest city and conditions are worsening over time. This basic research helps us understand how different urban land covers affect the heat affecting our communities,” says Vivoni, director of the Center for Hydrologic Innovations.

The team's findings could help shape how Arizona adapts to a hotter future while balancing the need for cooler cities.

“From this baseline, we can engineer improved outdoor environments that use our limited water to maximize cooling benefits," says Vivoni, a professor at the ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment. "The innovations developed and tested here in Phoenix will be vital to other regions as heat worsens globally.”

“Phoenix is a very heterogeneous city, like most metropolitan areas, so we need to understand how different types of land cover influence heat. That data can help people develop strategies and ways to cope with the heat,” says Nidia E. Rojas-Robles, a research assistant professor in the ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment.

Surrounded by grass, mature trees and residential neighborhoods, the Encanto site provides researchers with a contrast to Phoenix’s hotter, more developed areas.

“Because of the vegetation and the surrounding residential neighborhoods, the energy balance is proportioned,” Rojas-Robles says. “It’s noticeably cooler in this location than the other two sites.” https://ow.ly/Jipc50ZBxm2💧

Congratulations to Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University FORTA Professor of Pavement Engineering Kamil Kaloush and his team for receiving the Best Researcher Award at the 2026 Arizona Transportation Research Summit, hosted by the Arizona Transportation Institute, or , for their assessment of the asphalt shear rutting test method to improve performance of Arizona Department of Transportation asphalt mixes.

"I’m also grateful to have received the second place Best Poster Award," says Maryam Khooshechin Gilak, who is pursuing her doctorate in civil engineering at the ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment. "This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects nearly two years of dedication, collaboration and hard work on this project. It has been an incredible journey of learning, problem-solving and teamwork."

She thanks Kaloush, advisor and principal investigator of the project, for his leadership and support throughout the project, Professor Michael Mamlouk and Professor Hasan Ozer for their invaluable guidance, her colleague Morshed Washif Hasan, all the ASU students who contributed to this project and the team for their collaboration and support, which played a significant role in their success.

🎉 The ASU School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment congratulates Matthew Manock for being awarded the Life Member Scholarship by the American Society of Civil Engineers Phoenix Branch.

Matthew recently graduated with a civil engineering BSE, and continues to work on a Master's degree in transportation engineering.

He's been an ASCE at ASU student chapter member for three years, was project manager for the Concrete Bowling Ball Team and a member of the Timber Strong and Transportation Teams that earned awards in regional competitions. 🎓
