Join us in celebrating Professor Nina Berman on the publication of her article, “Integrating Kenyan Creatives into the Country’s Arts and Sports Science Education Curricula.” Based on ethnographic work conducted over the last five years in Diani, Kenya, the article offers insights into how acrobatic groups in Kenya could potentially help address the country’s teacher shortage. It also advances policy recommendations ranging from screening criteria and onboarding protocols to new employment categories, demonstrating how a creative-industry workforce can meet education-sector needs while promoting cross-sector, future-oriented solutions.

Isabelle Kinney earned three bachelor's degrees at ASU and a Russian minor. She is now a dual master's student at the University of Michigan, where her thesis on digital authoritarianism runs on Russian sources and her French keeps surfacing in research on Central Asia. 📖

She almost left SILC as a first-year student. A French intensive changed that, and the languages she built here now shape her research and her teaching.

Swipe to see where the languages took her. ➡️

Congratulations to Derek Cisneros, our Japanese major student, on being awarded the MEXT Japanese Studies Scholarship from the Government of Japan for the 2026–2027 academic year! 🇯🇵

He will spend a year studying at Hirosaki University in Aomori Prefecture, the northernmost prefecture on Japan's main island. Through the culture-focused program, he will strengthen his knowledge of Japanese culture and language while participating in hands-on learning opportunities, including local field trips and courses in tourism, art, regional industries and web marketing.

The scholarship program also provides support for academic costs, visa fees and a monthly stipend for living expenses—allowing for an incredible immersive experience. ✨

We are incredibly proud of you and excited to see all you accomplish in Japan!

Professor Enrico Minardi has been managing the Phoenix leg of the Italian Film Festival USA for several years, and the 2026 edition was the most successful yet. 🇮🇹

Held at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library over two days in April, the free festival drew around 300 attendees with showings nearly sold out. This year also marked a major milestone: for the first time, the festival broke even on copyright fees through donations and sponsorships. That success did not happen overnight. Over the past three years, his monthly Italian film screenings at the Scottsdale library have built a loyal local audience and opened the door to future opportunities for the Italian program at ASU.

Congratulations, Professor Minardi, on this incredible achievement! 👏

Cherry jam, homemade pasta, a leather keychain and six Italian study credits. Not a bad way to spend four weeks in Recanati, one of Italy's 🇮🇹 most authentically historic towns.

Our students spent 20 hours a week studying the language and even more hours living it. They explored the library of the great poet Giacomo Leopardi, hiked through Conero natural park, visited Assisi and even ran into a former SILC student along the way!

This is what studying Italian at SILC actually looks like. Applications for Summer 2027 open soon at https://silc.asu.edu/silc-studyabroad.

Ever dream of speaking Spanish and exploring Spain's vibrant coast? 🇪🇸 This summer, SILC students spent four weeks in Alicante, Spain, earning six credits while immersing themselves in local traditions and beach towns.

It is the perfect way to enjoy some paella while completing your degree and language requirements. 🥘

Imagine spending four weeks in Lyon 🇫🇷, speaking French every day, exploring Vieux Lyon on the weekends and earning seven credits toward your degree while you're at it. That's exactly what SILC students did this summer at the University of Lyon.

The credits count toward your degree and language requirement, so the only thing you have to worry about is which boulangerie to try next. 🥐🥖
