Indiana State Alumna Myeshia Smith Named Among DFW’s Most Influential Young Professionals
Indiana State University alumna Dr. Myeshia Smith has been recognized by the Dallas-Fort Worth Urban League of Young Professionals as one of the region’s most influential young professionals under 40, honoring her leadership and commitment to creating opportunities for children, families and communities.

Smith earned her Ph.D. in Guidance and Psychological Services from Indiana State in December 2019, specializing in School Psychology with a subspecialty in Public Administration. She credits her experience at Indiana State with helping her envision a career that extended beyond the traditional role of a school psychologist and combined psychology, education, leadership and public service.

“My time at Indiana State University was an important part of figuring out what I wanted my career to look like,” Smith said. “Indiana State helped me see that my training could be used in ways that were broader than I initially imagined.”

Today, Smith serves as the inaugural executive director of Operation Progress Fort Worth, a nonprofit organization that supports young people through a comprehensive approach centered on five pillars: Academics, Health & Wellness, Service, Life Skills, and Safety & Support.

A cornerstone of the organization’s work is a long-term mentorship program that pairs scholars with members of the Fort Worth Police Department beginning in third grade and continuing through college graduation. The model is designed to build authentic relationships and trust while creating opportunities for young people, their families and law enforcement officers to better understand one another.

Indiana State University's Elementary Education program has earned an A+ from the National Council on Teacher Quality for its preparation of future teachers in the science of reading! 📚🏆

This national recognition highlights the Bayh College of Education’s commitment to evidence-based reading instruction and preparing future educators in all five core components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Learning to read is one of the most important milestones in a child’s educational journey, and Indiana State is helping prepare educators to support student success from day one.
