Day 6 — Police Officer Ramon Suarez

NYPD Officer Ramon Suarez spent the morning of September 11 helping people escape from the World Trade Center.
At one point, Suarez and another officer came across a woman who could no longer walk. Together, they carried her out of the North Tower and got her to safety.

For Suarez, that could have been the moment to stay outside.
Instead, he went back in.
Officer Suarez was killed when the North Tower collapsed.

His story is a reminder that courage is not the absence of fear. It is making the decision to go back when you already understand exactly what is at risk.

Years later, his daughter Jillian followed in his footsteps and became an NYPD officer, carrying forward the legacy of service her father left behind.

Day 5 — Battalion Chief Orio Palmer

FDNY Battalion Chief Orio Palmer was known as one of the department’s most knowledgeable firefighters. He was also an accomplished athlete, something that would matter greatly on September 11.

After reaching the 41st floor of the South Tower by elevator, Palmer climbed another 37 flights of stairs carrying roughly 50 pounds of equipment, eventually reaching the devastated 78th-floor sky lobby.

Few first responders made it that high.
From there, Palmer radioed that firefighters had reached the fires and believed they could begin attacking them. His team also freed civilians trapped in an elevator shortly before the tower collapsed.

His story gives us a perspective that is sometimes lost when we look at photographs of the towers from the outside.
Inside, they were still climbing, still searching, and still trying to save people.

That was Battalion Cheif Orio Palmer’s resolve.

Day 4 — Captain Kathy Mazza

Port Authority Police Captain Kathy Mazza brought more than a badge to the job. Before entering law enforcement, she had worked as a nurse, and on September 11 both sides of that experience mattered.

As people were being evacuated from the World Trade Center, Mazza helped organize the response, assisted the injured, and worked to get civilians out safely.

She was not simply directing others from a distance.
She was in it with them.
Mazza was helping move a woman in an evacuation chair when the North Tower collapsed.

She became the first female Port Authority Police officer killed in the line of duty.

Her story is a reminder that leadership is not about rank alone. It is about being willing to stand beside the people you are responsible for when the situation is at its worst.

Day 3 — Firefighter Stephen Siller

FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller had just finished his shift when he learned that a plane had struck the World Trade Center.
He called his wife and told her he would be late.

When he reached the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, it had already been closed to traffic. That could have been the end of his response.
Instead, Siller strapped roughly 60 pounds of firefighting gear to his back and continued on foot through the tunnel toward Lower Manhattan.

He knew people needed help, and a closed roadway was not going to keep him from getting there.
Siller reached the World Trade Center and joined his fellow firefighters. He was killed when the towers collapsed.

His determination that morning became the inspiration behind the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, ensuring that his final run continues to mean something more than two decades later.

Day 2 — Police Officer Moira Smith
Some heroes are remembered because of the final moments of their lives. Others are remembered because someone survived to tell what they did.

NYPD Officer Moira Smith spent the morning of September 11 helping evacuate people from the South Tower. She was seen directing civilians, assisting the injured, and repeatedly returning to help more people escape.
Her husband would later describe her as someone who kept going back to save “just one more person.”

Officer Smith was killed when the South Tower collapsed.
She was 38 years old, a wife, a mother, and the only female NYPD officer killed in the attacks that day.

Her daughter Patricia later said simply:
“Mom, I am proud to be your daughter.”

Selflessness

For the seven days leading up to September 11, we will remember seven heroes whose courage represents the thousands of first responders who answered the call that morning.

Day 1 — Police Officer Christopher C. Amoroso

On September 11, 2001, Port Authority Police Officer Christopher Amoroso was 29 years old and had been a police officer for only two years.

When the World Trade Center was attacked, Officer Amoroso ran toward the danger.

He helped lead civilians from the towers to safety. He was struck and injured by falling debris, but instead of leaving for medical treatment, he continued working. He gathered oxygen packs and hard hats and went back inside to help more people.

He would not make it home.

Officer Amoroso left behind his wife and young daughter, Sophia Rose, who was only 19 months old. He had waited years for the opportunity to become a police officer. When his moment came to live out what that badge meant, he gave everything.
