THE DISTRICT UPDATE

How Strong is Your Club's Mentoring Program?

I recently spoke with a member who is convinced that assigning mentors to new members is the key to member retention. She pointed out that new member orientation programs are great. However, clubs that lack these programs can use mentors to make sure new Toastmasters understand the benefits of the Toastmasters educational and leadership programs and how things are done within the local club (its culture). Additionally, mentors give new members at least one Toastmaster from the club with whom they have a relationship. In her view, a great understanding of the benefits of the educational program plus a connection with at least one member of the club equals a member who will stay and grow as a communicator and leader.

Does your club assign mentors to all new members? If not, consider assigning a mentor who will help new members work through the first three speeches, understand the importance of bringing both manuals to meetings, and learn how to fill meeting roles. Develop a mentoring program for your club. Everyone involved -- the new member, the mentor and the club will benefit.
