🪞 Before Correcting Others, Examine Yourself

It is easy to recognize the faults of another person. Seeing our own can be considerably more difficult.

Freemasonry teaches men to work on themselves.

The Common Gavel symbolically reminds us to remove the rough and unnecessary parts of our character. But notice where that tool is directed: at our own stone, not someone else’s. 🔨

Before criticizing another person’s temper, examine your own.

Before questioning another person’s integrity, consider whether you have kept your word.

Before demanding more from others, ask whether you are giving your best.

This doesn’t mean ignoring wrongdoing or never holding others accountable. It means remembering that self-improvement begins with self-examination.

Freemasonry isn’t about a group of perfect men.

It is about good men recognizing that they still have work to do and encouraging one another to keep doing that work.

🧭 We cannot always change the people around us, but we can always continue working on the man in the mirror.

🤝 You Don’t Need a Title to Make a Difference

When people hear the word “service,” they sometimes think of large donations, leadership positions, or major community projects.

But some of the most meaningful acts of service are much smaller.

Helping a neighbor. Checking on someone who is struggling. Mentoring a young person. Giving your time when no one is watching. Simply being there when someone needs you. ❤️

Freemasonry teaches the importance of Relief, reminding us that we have a responsibility to care for others and help where we are able.

A man’s impact on his community isn’t measured only by what he accomplishes for himself. It can also be measured by how many people are better because he was willing to help.

You don’t have to be wealthy.
You don’t have to be important.
And you certainly don’t have to be a Freemason.

You simply have to be willing to serve.

🧭 A stronger community begins when ordinary people decide to look after one another.

📚 The Day We Stop Learning Is the Day We Stop Growing

One of the great lessons of Freemasonry is that a man’s education is never truly finished.

We often speak of making a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge, but that idea reaches far beyond learning ritual, history, or symbolism. It means remaining curious about the world around us and, perhaps more importantly, continuing to learn about ourselves.

🧭 Learn from those who have traveled the road before you.

📖 Read something that challenges the way you think.

👂 Listen to someone whose experiences are different from your own.

🔨 Learn from your mistakes instead of allowing them to define you.

None of us has reached the finished state. Like the Rough Ashlar, there will always be another rough edge that needs attention and another opportunity to improve.

Freemasonry doesn’t give a man all the answers. Instead, it encourages him to keep asking questions, seeking knowledge, and applying what he learns to become a better man.

No matter your age, position, or accomplishments, remain a student.

🧭 Keeping Our Passions Within Due Bounds

The Compasses are among the most recognizable symbols of Freemasonry, but their lesson reaches much deeper than the symbol itself.

Freemasons are taught that the Compasses remind us to circumscribe our desires and keep our passions within due bounds.

That lesson may be even more important today.

Anger. Pride. Ambition. Money. Politics. Social media. Even hobbies and careers can consume more of us than they should when we allow them to. Having passions isn’t wrong. In fact, passion can motivate us to accomplish extraordinary things. The challenge is learning when we control our passions and when our passions begin controlling us.

⚖️ Disagree without becoming hateful.
🗣️ Speak without tearing someone else down.
🏆 Pursue success without sacrificing your character.
❤️ Love deeply without neglecting other responsibilities.
🧭 Stand firmly for what you believe while still treating others with dignity.

The Compasses remind us that self-control is not weakness. It is strength under discipline.

Freemasonry does not promise to make a man perfect. It gives him tools and lessons that encourage him to examine himself and work toward becoming better than he was yesterday.

And that is work that never truly ends.

❤️ Family: The Labor That Matters Most

Freemasonry teaches us the importance of labor, service, and fulfilling our obligations. But among all the responsibilities competing for our time, we should never become so busy serving the world that we neglect the people waiting for us at home. 🏡

Our families are often the first to celebrate our successes, support us through our failures, and sacrifice alongside us as we pursue our goals.

A man can hold important titles, accomplish great things, and earn the respect of many, but those achievements mean considerably less if they come at the expense of being a good husband, father, son, brother, or friend.

One of the greatest lessons we can practice is simply being present.

Put down the phone. 📱
Have dinner together. 🍽️
Attend the ballgame. ⚾
Listen when someone needs to talk.
Tell the people you love that you love them. ❤️

Freemasonry encourages men to become better versions of themselves, and perhaps one of the best places to measure our progress is not inside the Lodge, but inside our own homes.

Take care of those entrusted to your care. Some of life’s most important work happens there.

🎉 Honoring Years of Brotherhood and Service 🧭

During last night’s Stated Meeting, we had the privilege of recognizing several of our Brothers who recently celebrated, or will soon celebrate, another anniversary in Freemasonry.

Each Masonic anniversary represents much more than another year on a membership record. It represents years of Brotherhood, service, fellowship, and commitment to the principles of our Craft. Some of the Brothers we honored have now dedicated more than 40 years to Freemasonry, an incredible milestone worthy of our deepest respect and appreciation. 👏

Think about how much can happen in 40 years. Officers come and go, generations of Masons pass through the Lodge, traditions are handed down, and countless new Brothers take their first steps into the Craft. Through all those years, these Brothers have remained part of that unbroken chain. ⛓️‍💙

To each Brother recognized, congratulations and thank you. Thank you for the time you have given, the lessons you have shared, the Brothers you have encouraged, and the example you continue to set for those following behind you.

May the Great Architect of the Universe bless each of you with many more years of health, happiness, fellowship, and Light. 🙏

As students across our community head back to school, we wish them, their teachers, and their families a safe and successful school year! 🍎✏️🎒

For Freemasons, education is not something that ends when we receive a diploma. We are taught to make a daily advancement in Masonic knowledge, but that lesson extends far beyond the walls of the Lodge. There is always something new to learn, some part of ourselves to improve, and some wisdom we can gain from those around us.

The classroom may change as we grow older, but we should never stop being students. 📖

To the young people beginning another school year: stay curious, work hard, ask questions, and never be afraid to learn from your mistakes. The knowledge you gain today will help build the person you become tomorrow.

And to the adults watching them return to school, perhaps this is a good reminder for us too: What are you learning today that will make you better tomorrow? 🧭
