How much do barbers actually make in Texas?

Real range: $30,000–$55,000 in year one depending on your model.

Commission — lower risk, lower ceiling.
Booth rental — higher upside, need the clientele.
Ownership — the long game.

For veterans whose GI Bill® benefits may cover training — you may be receiving a monthly housing allowance the entire time you’re in school.

That’s a check hitting your account every month while you build toward a license.

Real talk: what does a barber actually make in Texas?

Not the inflated numbers. Not the best-case scenario. The real picture — booth rental, commission, ownership — and what the first 90 days look like when you're starting out.

If you're a veteran, here's what makes this different: eligible veterans may receive a monthly housing allowance from the VA while they're in school. That check doesn't stop when you graduate — your barber income starts stacking on top of it.

We break down the full income picture in this week's video. Link in comments.

5 benefits veteran barbers don’t know about — and most never use. 👇🏽

1️⃣ Free LLC in Texas — Your DD-214 permanently waives the $300 filing fee. Five years of franchise tax exemption on top of that.

2️⃣ SBA Veterans Advantage Loan — Up to $5 million. Reduced fees. Built specifically for veteran-owned businesses. That’s your shop build-out funded.

3️⃣ Free Legal Help — The Texas Veterans Commission connects veteran business owners with free legal services. Before you sign a lease on a suite or a shop — use this.

4️⃣ Federal Contracting Set-Asides — Veteran-owned barbershops can register to bid on government grooming contracts. Military bases. Federal facilities. Most barbers never touch this.

5️⃣ VA Home Loan — Buy the building your shop sits in instead of paying someone else’s mortgage. You already earned this benefit. Use it.

You went through the military. You have access to things civilian barbers don’t.

The license gets you in the chair. These benefits get you to ownership.

Most veterans had no idea this was even possible.

🎖️The GI Bill®️ may cover your barber training AND send you a housing allowance check every month while you’re enrolled

not to the school. To you.

Eligible veterans in Texas City may qualify for up to $2,193/month.

That’s what your benefits can actually do.

The day you understood the double sink was never meant for you… that was the day you leveled up. 😂

But real talk

Maturity is the most underrated business skill in the barbershop industry. And it’s one veterans already have more of than they realize.

You spent years following orders you didn’t always agree with. Working with people you didn’t always like. Showing up anyway.

That’s not just discipline — that’s emotional maturity. And it transfers directly behind the chair.
The barbers who build loyal clientele aren’t always the most technically gifted.

They’re the ones who know how to listen. How to make a client feel seen. How to check their ego at the door and make the experience about the person in the chair — not themselves.

Veterans get that faster than most.
If you’re transitioning out and trying to figure out what’s next — barbering rewards exactly the kind of man the military built. The patience. The consistency. The ability to read a room.

The double sink is hers. The chair is yours. 💈

I talk to veterans who had no idea this was sitting right in front of them.
$30 a cut
× 8 clients a day
× 5 days a week
= $62,400 a year
No degree. No boss. No ceiling.
And if you served — your GI Bill benefits may cover the full cost of training to get there.
That’s a licensed skill, immediate income, and a business you own.
