This week, Worshipful Master Don had the honor of presenting Brother Larry with his 50-Year Masonic pin, certificate, and dues card, joined by multiple Lodge brothers.

It was a special moment for Don, as Larry once served on his investigation committee when he first petitioned the Lodge. To now recognize Larry’s fifty years of faithful service was truly meaningful.

The brothers spent some time in fellowship, sharing memories and catching up. For those who sent along greetings, Larry was grateful to be in your thoughts.

Congratulations to Brother Larry on 50 years of dedication to the Craft!

Famous Freemason: Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States, was a dedicated Freemason. Initiated in 1851 at Greeneville Lodge No. 119 in Tennessee, Johnson remained active in the Craft throughout his life.

When the Civil War erupted, Johnson was serving as U.S. Senator from Tennessee, the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the Union. Abraham Lincoln later appointed him as Military Governor of Tennessee and chose him as Vice President during his second term. Following Lincoln’s assassination in April 1865, Johnson assumed the presidency during one of the most turbulent chapters in American history, overseeing the first years of Reconstruction.

Just a few years later, on January 8, 1868, Three Oaks Lodge No. 239 was officially chartered, placing our beginnings alongside Johnson’s presidency and the nation’s difficult path of healing after the Civil War.

Andrew Johnson’s story is a reminder of the resilience, leadership, and fraternity that has always shaped our Craft and our country.

Albert A. Archer was a charter member of Three Oaks Lodge No. 239 and was the original Senior Deacon. But before that he was a Captain in the 111th Ohio Infantry. The unit mustered in 1862 until 1865 and saw battles in multiple states. The Battle of Nashville, Atlanta and Kennesaw Mountain are some main battles they fought in.

At some point Brothers Archer moved east to New York and on November 12th 1915, he laid down his working tools. He is interred in Elmlawn Cemetery in Tonawanda, New York. He was a member of Tonawanda Lodge No. 247 and they were in charge of his Masonic Funeral.

The Senior Deacon’s Station

In every Masonic Lodge, the Senior Deacon serves as the messenger between the Worshipful Master and the Senior Warden, ensuring the flow of communication and order within the Lodge, welcoming visiting brethren and receiving and conducting candidates.

His jewel is the square and compasses with a blazing sun.

At Three Oaks Lodge No. 239, our very first Senior Deacon was Albert A. Archer — a man who had already proven his courage and leadership as a Captain in the Civil War before helping to shape our Lodge in its earliest days.
