The Circulation Desk at Baldwin Library at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be closed on Friday, June 19, 2026, in observance of Juneteenth. The desk will reopen on Monday, June 22, 2026.

Why Is Juneteenth a Federal Holiday?

Juneteenth, short for "June Nineteenth," commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, to enforce the emancipation of enslaved people and ensure that freedom was recognized throughout Texas.

This occurred more than two years after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared enslaved people in Confederate states to be free.

Lincoln led the nation through the American Civil War, preserved the Union, and took actions that helped pave the way for the abolition of slavery in the United States.

Today, Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality. It is recognized as the nation's longest-running African American holiday.

We wish everyone a meaningful and reflective Juneteenth.

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College 2026 Orientation is on my mind! This Saturday, May 30th, we are excited to kick off the Summer 2026 Orientation season! Based on feedback from last year's program and space availability, we have made several changes to the Orientation schedule. We are excited to host students and their guests on campus this weekend!

During the Orientation day, students and their guests will have the opportunity to learn more about what it takes to become a responsible, academically successful college student.

This week, 18 May - 22 May 2026, marks Dementia Awareness Week. An opportunity to raise awareness and support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

Dementia affects millions of individuals and families, often in ways we don't see. This week, let's raise awareness, reduce the stigma, and support those living with dementia and their caregivers. Patience and meaningful understanding can significantly improve the quality of life for the person with dementia and the caregiver.

If you can't sit with the person who has dementia, support the caregiver. Ask if they need anything, whether it's a meal, a plate of homemade cookies, or taking out the trash. Those simple things can help so much!

Here at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, we are dedicated to fostering supportive environments. By raising dementia awareness, we can build more informed, compassionate, and supportive communities for students and families, as well as for the surrounding communities.

We all can make a difference in the lives of others.

This year's focus is on improving dementia diagnosis, with 1 in 3 people living with dementia currently undiagnosed. Early recognition has never been more important.
