Spotlight Saturday: Andy Carter🌱

Meet Andy Carter, our Research Station Superintendent at UGA-Tifton! He began his UGA career in 2008 in Athens with the AgrAbility in Georgia Project. After working with Dr. Gary Hawkins and serving as a technician for Dr. Scott Tubbs in the Cropping Systems program, he became farm manager of the Plant Science Farm in 2015. Later that year, he stepped into the Research Station Superintendent role he holds today.

His day-to-day responsibilities vary depending on the needs of the research farms, equipment, irrigation systems, and the people he works with. From coordinating land use, crop rotations, farm operations, and research needs to working with researchers and specialists to address issues with soil fertility, herbicide carryover, erosion, roads, and other land-related challenges, no two days look the same.

His ultimate goal is to support research and help researchers be successful. Communication, coordination, problem-solving, and record keeping are all important parts of making that happen.
His favorite part of working at UGA-Tifton? The people. The Field Research Services team supports 45–50 different crops in a typical year, but the impact goes far beyond campus. Hearing from farmers about how UGA research and support have made a difference in their operations is what makes the work so rewarding.

One of the most valuable things he has learned is that you don’t have to know everything; you just need to know the people who do. Building strong connections and knowing who to turn to has been an important part of his role in supporting successful research. He has also seen firsthand the far-reaching impact of UGA-Tifton research. Turfgrass developed on the Tifton Campus has been used in the Olympics, World Cup and Super Bowl, while peanuts developed through research on local farms make up roughly 60% of the peanut acreage grown in the United States.

Farm and equipment upgrades, improved irrigation systems, and providing guidance across the research farms are among his accomplishments at UGA-Tifton. But he says it’s the people and team members of Field Research Services who make the department successful.

Fun fact: He’s about to become a grandpa!

Thank you for all you do to support research, our growers, and the UGA-Tifton community! 🐾♥

🐾 FUN FACT FRIDAY + NATIONAL COLLEGE COLORS DAY! ❤️🖤

Today is National College Colors Day, so what better way to celebrate than with a little UGA history?

Did you know UGA’s original school colors weren’t red and black?

In December 1891, editors of the University of Georgia’s literary magazine selected old gold, black, and crimson as the university’s colors. At the time, it was customary for each class to select colors and publish them in the yearbook.

But UGA professor Charles Herty wasn’t a fan of the yellowish-gold color. When he saw the magazine’s cover, he referred to the color as “yellow” and worked to have it eliminated from UGA’s colors.

Then came 1893 and Georgia’s first-ever football game against Georgia Tech. Tech supporters reportedly had students from a nearby girls’ school wear old gold and white to the game. Georgia went on to lose 28–6 in Athens.

According to UGA’s historical account, the events surrounding that game helped lead to gold being removed from Georgia’s official school colors.

And the rest is history! ❤️🖤

Don’t forget to wear your red, black, and white for UGA’s first home game of the season tomorrow! 🏈🐾

Fun Fact Friday! 🐾❤️
Did you know UGA-Tifton wasn’t always called UGA-Tifton?

What is now UGA-Tifton began as the Coastal Plain Experiment Station, established in 1919 to conduct agricultural research and help Georgia farmers. Over the years, its mission has grown to include research, education, and outreach, evolving into the UGA-Tifton we know today! 🌾🔬

From the experiment station to today, UGA-Tifton continues to help move Georgia agriculture forward.
