“The gift of access to these standards will help students develop creative solutions that align with industry best practices,” said Dr. Yakov Lapitsky, a professor and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. “This access reinforces our program’s strength in teaching students to be creative, practical and employment-ready problem‑solvers.”

Institute representatives joined faculty, staff and students as well as industry representatives and government officials in a celebratory luncheon on Thursday, Jan. 29.

Celebrating Leadership in the Chemical Engineering Department

Faculty and staff from the Chemical Engineering Department recently gathered for a special lunch to recognize and thank Dr. Maria Coleman for her outstanding service as department chair, and to welcome Dr. Yakov Lapitsky as the new chair.

Also in attendance were several former department chairs — Dr. Bruce Poling, Dr. Steven LeBlanc, and Dr. Glenn Lipscomb — making this a truly memorable occasion. This photo captures over 35 years of departmental leadership in one frame!

We’re proud and grateful to have had such dedicated and visionary leaders guiding our department through the years.

Attention Alumni & Friends of the Department ~

This summer the College of Engineering is launching the UToledo Engineering Summer Camp—a weeklong day camp designed to give rising 9th–12th graders a hands-on introduction to the world of engineering.

The camp will run July 21–25, 2025 and will offer participants the chance to engage in interactive activities, tour labs, and tackle real-world engineering challenges—all led by UToledo faculty and student mentors. Campers will explore a different engineering discipline every half day, ranging from chemical and bioengineering to electrical engineering and applied computing.

We are asking for your help in spreading the word about this exciting new opportunity for high school students interested in exploring STEM careers. The attached flyer includes more program details, as well as a QR code for registration. Please reach out with any questions!

Senior Chemical Engineering student, Helashika Wijemanne, had the honor of cutting the ribbon for the renamed High Bay Atrium, a shared programming and event space in the North Engineering Building.

Cenovus recently committed $1 million to UToledo, supporting student organizations and scholarship programs in the College of Engineering and College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. In recognition of this support, the College of Engineering renamed the High Bay Atrium, the Cenovus Energy Hub.

The end of an era indeed.

We thought we would share the news that Palmer Hall is currently in the process of being torn down. For those of us on-campus right now, it's surreal to watch. But, new and exciting things are on the horizon!

Good morning, The University of Toledo Rocket Engineering alumni and friends!

We’re witnessing the end of an era as our beloved Palmer Hall, the former R&D building for O-I Glass, is being demolished to make way for new and exciting developments on the engineering campus. This building has been a cornerstone of our college for many years, and we know it holds countless memories for many of you.

As we share daily photos of the demolition, we invite you to share your stories and memories of the times you spent here.

Did you have a favorite class, an unforgettable professor, or a life-changing moment within these walls? We want to hear about it!

Please comment below with your memories and stories. Let’s celebrate the legacy of Palmer Hall together, and start planning for what the Engineering Quad could be.
