Are we right?? Great day to pop the tops and make sure your girls have enough food till Spring gets here! We hope everyone had minimal losses over the winter - but winter isn't over yet - the critical time is starting soon as they start brooding up and will need more food to keep that at 95*.

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) Control for Your Property

The Ohio Department of Agriculture does not currently remove SLF or tree-of-heaven from private property.

āœ… What You Can Do:

Inspect Items - check furniture, tools, firewood, and other outdoor items for SLF before moving.

Follow quarantine rules when relocating to another area.

Remove Host Plants and cut down invasive host plants like:
Tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima)
Wild grapevine
Black walnut saplings, if infested

🄚 Destroy Egg Masses (Fall–Spring)

Scrape off egg masses into soapy water or rubbing alcohol

Use horticultural oils to treat eggs in winter/early spring

🪰 Control Nymphs & Adults (Spring–Fall)

Swat, stomp, or vacuum when populations are manageable

Dispose of vacuum bags immediately

🧓 Use Low-Toxicity Insecticides

Apply insecticidal soap or horticultural oils

Safe for general use; reapply as needed

🧪 Apply Stronger Insecticides (as needed)

For spot treatments: Bifenthrin, carbaryl, malathion

For longer control: Dinotefuran, imidacloprid (systemic insecticides)

Consider professional pest control for heavy infestations

āš ļø Special Notes:

Protect Pollinators: Don’t apply systemic insecticides when plants are flowering

Avoid runoff to nearby flowering plants

Follow the Label: Always use pesticides exactly as labeled

ā€œThe Label is the Lawā€
