Danielle Dougherty, director of admissions for COMLS programs, recently participated in the exhibitor fair at the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP) in New Orleans. The University of Toledo was among over 150 exhibitors, engaging with hundreds of Pre-Health advisors from across the country. 🚀

After completing her third year, medical student Tara Tekkey recently traveled halfway around the world to conduct research she hopes will improve maternal and infant health both abroad and at home.

Tara was awarded a prestigious Fulbright-Fogarty Public Health Fellowship, a nationally competitive program that supports research in low- and middle-income countries. At the end of July she left for Dhulikhel Hospital in Dhulikhel, Nepal, about 20 miles from Kathmandu, where for 10 months she is studying how ambient air pollution affects inflammation in maternal and fetal blood and how those changes influence pregnancy outcomes. She hopes the fellowship will help shape a career that blends research with direct patient care.

Congratulations to James A. Molnar, Supervisor of Communications & Digital Media in the Dean’s Office, who was named Awards Chair on the steering committee for the External Relations Group (ERG) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).

The responsibilities that come with being a part of the ERG Steering Committee include biweekly meetings, participation in other AAMC meetings and contributing to the success of the spring conference. This year, he will oversee the Awards for Excellence competition, which honors and celebrates the most innovative and effective approaches to promote academic medicine.

James joined the steering committee three years ago and has served as the marketing representative, marketing chair, and vice chair of communications, community relations and marketing. As part of his service on the committee, James recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for a three-day planning meeting at AAMC headquarters in preparation for the 2027 AAMC External Relations Conference, which will be held in Denver. While there, the group also met with Dr. David Skorton, President and CEO of AAMC and our 2026 COMLS Commencement Speaker.

James has participated in several conferences, including presenting or facilitating sessions along with serving on the awards committee and the marketing advisory group. In the spring, he also hosted the conference film festival. (James also brought Rocky along and took him to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum to see rockets.)

Faculty from The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences recently served as course directors for a Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course at the Lloyd A. Jacobs Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center, training more than 30 healthcare professionals in the early management of critically ill patients.

Developed by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the multidisciplinary course brought together physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, pharmacists and administrators. Topics included mechanical and noninvasive ventilation, advanced airway management, sepsis and shock, traumatic brain injury and other critical care emergencies. The course included online modules, hands-on training sessions, and a post-test, with participants receiving a certificate from the Society of Critical Care Medicine upon successful completion.

The course was directed by Dr. Fadi Safi, associate professor in the Department of Medicine and program director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Dr. Jill Cherry-Bukowiec, associate professor in the Department of Surgery. Additional instruction was provided by Dr. Aamir Patel, assistant professor in the Department of Surgery, Kyley Keene, PA-C, Surgical Critical Care, Melissa Kukiela, director of respiratory care, and Conner Buraszeski, chief SICU nursing officer, while the simulation staff provided essential support throughout the day. Dr. Janice Zimmerman served as a course consultant, bringing extensive expertise and national leadership in critical care education through SCCM.

Participants rated the course highly, demonstrating more than a 50% improvement across all 18 surveyed clinical competency areas. Based on the success of the inaugural offering, organizers plan to expand the FCCS course to neighboring hospitals and institutions several times each year.

The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences and the Department of Pathology hosted the Amira Gohara, M.D., Festschrift Scientific Symposium on Saturday, Aug. 22, on campus. The symposium celebrated Dr. Gohara’s extraordinary career and lasting contributions, recognizing more than 50 years of service dedicated to teaching, mentorship, patient care and institutional leadership.

The festivities began Friday evening with a celebratory dinner welcoming Dr. Gohara’s family, colleagues and symposium speakers, several of whom traveled to Toledo for the special weekend. During the dinner, she received a proclamation from the City of Toledo and recognition from the Ohio House of Representatives honoring her exceptional service and contributions.

Saturday’s symposium brought together current and former colleagues, mentees and institutional leaders for a day of scientific presentations and personal reflections. Topics ranged from renal physiology and medical education to leadership, transplantation, pathology and molecular diagnostics, illustrating the remarkable breadth of Dr. Gohara’s professional influence. Additional tributes (pictured below) included a letter from University President Dr. James Holloway and the presentation of a star quilt from Dr. Monica Mayer.

Together, the celebrations highlighted Dr. Gohara’s enduring legacy and the many students, residents, faculty members and colleagues whose lives she has touched throughout her distinguished career.
