“College should be more than just a book and a PowerPoint meant to help us memorize concepts. This was an actual glimpse into the real-life struggles and rewards of a family business.” — Bradley Smith, president of Marsha’s Buckeyes LLC

This semester, students in our Family Business course stepped out of the classroom and into our local businesses to explore what it takes to keep a family enterprise running across generations.

Angie Jones, director of the UToledo Family Business Center, shares how these partnerships transform the way students see their careers — moving them from passive learners to active problem-solvers in the local business community.

At 15, Josh Ford called CPS to save himself from an abusive household. This Saturday, he's walking across the stage to prove what he knows to be true: he is more than his circumstances.

Earning a diploma is a milestone for anyone, but for Josh, it represents a future he once wasn’t sure he’d reach. While his peers were focusing on exams, Josh was facing homelessness, health struggles and waking up at 3:30 a.m. to work multiple jobs before attending classes to pay for school.

Through his unwavering grit and the support of the Kinsey Determination Scholarship, Josh refused to let circumstances define his future.

Today, Josh serves as a tour guide, an orientation team member, a mentor and a student staff member for both the Office of Student Engagement and the Business Student Success Center. After graduation, he plans to explore careers in public policy and ethics consulting.

Congratulations Josh! We're so proud to call you a Rocket 🚀

On Friday, May 1, Jennifer Archer will officially add a new title to her resume: Master of Business Administration graduate. At 53, the Sylvania resident already holds a demanding role as the director of community engagement at UToledo Health. A major catalyst for her return to the classroom was the UToledo employee tuition benefit, which removed a significant financial barrier after she and her husband helped put their older children through college. As Jennifer prepares to walk the stage, she hopes her story encourages other UToledo employees who might be considering a return to the classroom. https://myut.link/qx6
