Lab and Field Assistants : Invasive Species Research and Removal

Grass Carp Early Life History Crew Member(s): 2 positions available
Adult Grass Carp Removal Crew Member(s): 6 positions available
The person(s) in these positions will assist with sampling trips on Lake Erie and its tributaries in support of invasive Grass Carp research and control. They will participate in collecting and processing biological samples on a boat and in the laboratory. They will regularly record data and use common data storage and analysis software, e.g. Excel and Access. This is a seasonal, grant funded position for a total of 1000 hours (6 months of work). Benefits not included. Hourly wages at $16.50/hour, approx. 40 hours per week. Tentative start date for Grass Carp Early Life History Crew Members is April 25, 2021 (flexible). Tentative start date for Adult Grass Carp Removal Crew Members is May 10, 2021. We are an equal opportunity employer and value a diverse workforce.
Persons on the Adult Removal Crew will spend the majority of their time in the field on boats removing adult grass carp using both trammel nets and electrofishing. The remaining time will be spent maintaining gear and processing captured fish in the lab. The Early Life History Crew will split their time between the field and lab with more field work associated with high river flows. Field work includes the use of ichthyoplankton nets to collect fish eggs and larvae. Lab work includes processing of samples, identification of larval fish and eggs, identification of Grass Carp egg and larval developmental stage, processing of captured fish.
Individuals have the opportunity to occasionally assist with both positions as needed.
Qualifications
Education/experience/certifications:
BS in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Fisheries, or related field required.
Must have basic knowledge of Great Lakes ecology, fish identification, limnology, water chemistry, or related expertise.
Must be able to assist with sampling on a boat in the Great Lakes with supervision, ability to collect, process, and analyze samples.
Must have valid drivers license and be able to drive a truck towing a boat.
Some experience in the operation of standard fisheries and limnological gear and/or experience in processing and organization of fisheries data preferred.
Experience with boats and/or trailering preferred.
Knowledge of standard data storage and analysis packages, specifically Excel and Access.
Communication and other skills:
The persons in these positions must work well as a team member, sometimes under uncomfortable field conditions (e.g. cold, heat, rain) and long hours. Working on boats in wavy conditions may cause nausea in some individuals. Work schedules may change with little notice due to weather and river conditions.
