The University of Toledo Student Government (UTSG) has been devastated to learn of this week’s assault on the Asian community. Eight victims - Soon Chung Park, Hyun Jung Grant, Suncha Kim, Yong A. Yue, Delaina Ashley Yaun, Paul Andre Michaels, Xiaojie Tan, and Daoyou Feng - lost their lives due to senseless violence motivated by racial intolerance and hatred. The University of Toledo Student Government will not stand for racism, sexism, or injustice towards the Asian community, particularly towards women within the community, and further wishes to emphasize our unwavering condemnation of racism in all forms- both on and off campus.
The suspect targeted three massage parlors beginning Tuesday at 5pm. He then began a violent tirade resulting in the tragic loss of eight lives. Eight individuals who went out for another day at work or a relaxing day at the spa ended up returning home in body bags. Hate crimes such as this have risen significantly against Asians and Asian Americans since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that since March 2020, more than 3,795 incidents of discrimination and hatred towards Asian and Asian American individuals in the United States has been reported. Our condolences are with the victim’s families and every other Asian and Asian American person who has felt this horrific pain.
Racism has been an issue in the United States since its foundation. The unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were not applied to marginalized communities within society. Still today, we see the detrimental effects racism continues to have in our nation. Racism promotes violence over peace, division over unity, and hatred over love and understanding. Sexism has also profoundly affected many marginalized communities within the United States, as perpetuated stereotypes, microaggressions, and the fetishization of women continues to cause harm to many underserved individuals. The resulting intersectionality of sexism and racism particularly harms Asian and Asian American women. It is imperative that racism and sexism in all forms be eradicated for the preservation and progress of our society.
The University of Toledo Student Government supports our Asian and Asian American students and community. We must use our voices to fight for what is right in the best way possible in order to implement change. At our University, we must further push for inclusion, equity, and diversity. We must educate ourselves on the ongoing issues that are a reality for the Asian and Asian American population. No person should have to live their lives under constant fear and oppression, but these are two true barriers that the Asian community has to face on a daily basis. We, as students, must come together during this time in order to demand change.
While many members of UTSG are not of Asian descent and will never understand the struggles of our fellow Asian and Asian American students at the University of Toledo and in the Toledo community, we stand with you. We have a responsibility to stand with our fellow students in demanding justice, equality, and change. As student senators, we thank you for your voices and invite you to share any concerns or opinions that you may have. We are here to serve you as students in any way possible.
