Mathematics & Statistics

Mathematics & Statistics The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Toledo offers graduate and undergraduate programs in both Mathematics and Statistics.

The University of Toledo - merged in 2006 with the Medical University of Ohio - has over 20,000 students, 7,000 employees, and the third largest operating budget of Ohio public universities. The Department is housed in University Hall - built in the Collegiate Gothic style and completed in 1931 at a cost of $2,000,000. University Hall was designed by the architectural firm of Mills, Rhines, Bellma

n and Nordhoff Inc.; 400 workers took 11 months and used 50,000 tons of limestone to complete the 63 foot tall building and its 205 foot tower.

šŸŽ“ Title: Global Hopf bifurcation and connected components in a delayed predator-prey model

🧠 Abstract:
The talk explores the dynamics of a delayed predator-prey system with a Holling type II functional response, focusing on how time delay and carrying capacity interact. Using local and global Hopf bifurcation theory, the work reveals sequences of bifurcations and nested connected components of global Hopf branches. A highlight is showing that the classical limit cycle of the non-delayed system lies within a connected component of the global Hopf bifurcation in Fuller’s space. These results also show how delays can induce oscillatory coexistence at lower carrying capacities, offering surprising biological insights.

ā˜• Refreshments will be available in the lounge before the talk.

Title: Effects of Human Movement on the Geographic Spread of Infectious Diseases

Location: UH 4010
Time : 4-5pm
Speaker: Daozhou Gao, Assistant Professor, Cleveland State University

Abstract: Over recent decades, globalization, urbanization, and advances in transportation have profoundly reshaped patterns of human mobility, changing how frequently, how far, and for what purposes people travel. While increased mobility brings many social and economic benefits, it also facilitates the spread of infectious diseases and creates significant challenges for disease control and eradication. Because individuals can move quickly between regions, patch models that incorporate discrete spatial structure have become essential tools for understanding and predicting the spatio–temporal spread of infectious diseases. In this talk, I will use a Susceptible–Infectious–Susceptible (SIS) patch model to examine how the intensity of population dispersal influences disease persistence and disease prevalence, measured respectively by the basic reproduction number and the proportion of infected individuals. Our analysis shows that increasing dispersal always reduces disease persistence but may increase disease prevalence. This result highlights the importance of evaluating control strategies using metrics beyond the basic reproduction number alone. I will also briefly discuss the role of dispersal asymmetry and nonhomogeneous mixing.

About the speaker: Dr. Daozhou Gao received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Miami in 2012 and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Francisco from 2012 to 2015. Prior to joining CSU, he was a full professor at Shanghai Normal University in China. His research focuses on mathematical epidemiology, population ecology, and differential equations. He has co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, which have garnered more than 5,800 citations. Dr. Gao also serves on the editorial boards of Mathematical Biosciences, Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering, and Infectious Disease Modelling.

Title: Unbounded Reinhardt domains with finite dimensional Bergman spaces in C^n

Abstract: It is well known that if U is a bounded domain in C^n, then the Bergman space over that domain will be infinite dimensional. In 1984 Wiegerinck proved that if U is an unbounded domain in C then the Bergman space over U will be either infinite dimensional or trivial. In that same paper, they also gave an example of an unbounded domain U in C^2 such that dimension of the Bergman space over U is finite but not trivial. Since all domains in C are pseudoconvex, Wigerinck conjectured that in C^n, n > 1, if U is a pseudoconvex domain, then the Bergman space over U is either infinite dimensional or trivial. This conjecture is still unanswered in the general case, but some progress has been made. In December of 2025, Hayashida and Kamimoto found a new family of domains in C^n that has the same properties as Wiegerinck's original example. In this talk we will discuss some results related to the Wiegerinck conjecture and prove that the domains given in the paper by Hayashida and Kamimoto induce finite dimensional Bergman spaces.
