KY Drought Update
This ongoing dryness is reflected in the latest U.S. Drought Monitor (Figure 1), which shows nearly 21 percent of Kentucky in the “Extreme” drought category. This designation carries particular importance for livestock producers, as it’s directly tied to eligibility for the USDA Livestock Forage Disaster Program, which provides financial assistance when drought significantly reduces forage availability.

As of May 14th, 38 counties in Kentucky have met the threshold for a qualifying drought, meaning producers may be eligible for three or more monthly payments (Figure 2). In counties where “extreme” drought conditions have been in place for at least four weeks, producers may qualify for four monthly payments. While additional eligibility requirements apply, these drought designations represent an important first step in the assistance process. Producers should monitor these designations going forward and prepare to document livestock inventories if / when they become eligible. Specific questions about the LFP program should be directed to the local FSA office.

News from Andy Bailey and Bob Pearce: Section 18 Emergency Exemption Approved for Excalia® Fungicide for Burley and Dark To***co in Kentucky

Effective May 15, 2026, Excalia® fungicide (inpyrfluxam) has been approved for use in burley and dark to***co in Kentucky under a Section 18 Emergency Exemption. Excalia is labeled specifically for target spot control, and this approval allows growers to incorporate Excalia into a fungicide rotation to help manage target spot. This label expires on October 1, 2026.

Growers using Excalia must follow all use instructions associated with this exemption. A copy of the Section 18 label must be in their possession during mixing and application, and pesticide application records must document any use of Excalia during the exemption period. Section 18 label and Best Use Guide can be found in the Additional Resource Section.
