Neil Van De Putte (pronounced “văn-də-pŭttē”), C’16 was born in Omaha, Nebraska on March 11, 1990, and grew up in Toms River, New Jersey. At Drew University, he was a physics major and math minor who maintained a 4.0 GPA. He thrived at Drew, growing into a true scholar and inspiring others to excel as well. Friends remembered him as a brilliant student and a humble spirit, someone who was as atten

tive to his studies as he was to them. Neil was soft spoken, kind, sensitive, and perceptive, with a playful sense of humor and a knack for making people smile, even during late-night study sessions. His commitment to his studies earned him the honor of taking part in the Drew Summer Science Institute during two consecutive summers. Neil passed away tragically when he was struck by a car in July 2015, less than a year before he was set to graduate from Drew University. Harrington Prize in Physics and Astronomy for
outstanding research on an artificial neural network. He had hoped to continue his studies at Columbia University in the engineering program. His commitment to excellence continues to be celebrated at Drew, inspiring future generations of students. A tree was planted in his memory near the front entrance to the Hall of Sciences. He will receive his Drew degree posthumously in May 2016. This momentous occasion marks the 1st time Drew University has given a degree pothumously to one of their students, in their 148 year history! Family and friends established the Neil Van De Putte C’16 Fund for Excellence in Physics and Math to honor his memory and to
carry on his legacy at Drew University. For donations to the fund, checks should be made out to:

Neil's maternal grandmother Ann Yaar, passed away last month. Ann was very ill with Alzheimer's at the time that Neil passed and it was decided that it would be too much for Ann to handle, so she never knew of Neil's passing. If you were a friend or family member of Ann's, we are asking that you consider donating to Neil's Fund in her name, in lieu of sending flowers or other gifts of sympathy. The check should be written to: DREW UNIVERSITY with "Neil Van De Putte Fund" written in the memo section. Mail to the Attention of the Vice President-University Advancement, Drew University, 36 Madison Avenue Madison, NJ 07940.

Ann Beninger Yaar
12.6.1930 -12.11.2017

Ann grew up in Waverly, OH and graduated from Ohio State in 1953 with a teaching degree in elementary education. In between school, at the tender age of 19, she taught in a classroom with 3 grades and 50 children in the hills of Appalachia. She taught in CA, Colombia, and Venezuela, South America, OH, AL, VA and finally in South Bend, IN. When she couldn't get a job teaching, she held several different jobs in between. Fingerprinting clerk for the FBI, American Lung Assoc, and the Census Bureau, to name a few. She loved to travel. She was determined to see the world and continued to travel to exotic places well into her 70's.
Ann taught the children of US oil company employees who were working in Venezuela and Colombia, South America. In 1957, she met Antonio Yaar in Cali, Colombia, at a party welcoming the teachers. Tony (Antonio) was a chemical engineer. Both of his parents were born in Bethlehem, Palestine, however they moved to South America in the early 1900's. Tony was born and raised in Colombia. After a whirlwind romance, they were married June 9th, that same year in Cali, Colombia. Ann and Tony had five children in seven years.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Peter Ricardo ('65) and John Miguel Yaar ('85); by her husband, Antonio Yaar ('97) and her grandson, Neil Van De Putte ('15). She was also preceded by Metyn Olejnik ('11), who was her close companion for many years.
Her surviving children are George Yaar, a computer expert in Santa Barbara, CA, Victoria Yaar Marraccini (William Marraccini), who owns a horse farm in Locust, NJ and Yvonne Yaar-Sharkey (Dennis Sharkey), a glass artist living in Toms River, NJ. Ann is also survived by four grandchildren, Christina, Katherine, and Marie Marraccini; and Alyse Van De Putte.
In lieu of flowers, Ann's family asks that you donate to a literacy program of your choice or donate to the Neil Van De Putte Scholarship Fund, in Ann's name. The check should be written to: DREW UNIVERSITY with "Neil Van De Putte Fund" written in the memo section. Mail to the Attention of the Vice President-University Advancement, Drew University, 36 Madison Avenue Madison, NJ 07940.

I don't think I ever posted- Commencement from 2016. Drew Univ. President, mentions Neil and the degree he was awarded posthumously, the first for the University in their 149 year history. If you want to hear that portion, fast forward to around 25:45 (25 minutes and 45 seconds) 1:12:02

Watch the entire ceremony, including a thoughtful speech by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and author of 11 books.

UPDATE!
Someone* was given a scholarship from Neil's Fund this summer. He/she is working on a summer research project with a Drew Professor. The work combines aspects of software engineering, program analysis, natural language processing, computational linguistics, information retrieval, text mining, and machine learning.

It is wonderful that something good comes from Neil's death. All of our donations serve a higher purpose- educating young men and women, who will go on to be the professionals that help make our world a better place.

Thank you to all who donated and all who made this possible.

*I have not asked permission to use the student's name, therefore I am keeping his/her name private.
