Northern Oklahoma College Thus, the sixth Territorial Legislature passed an appropriation bill on March 1, 1901 for the establishment of the University Preparatory School at Tonkawa.

INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE:

The history of Northern Oklahoma College began in 1901 when the Honorable James Wilkin realized the need for a college in the Tonkawa, Oklahoma area. During the first two decades, the school served primarily as a “feeder” institution for the University of Oklahoma and paralleled the university curriculum of music, foreign languages, business, literature, and military scienc

e. In addition, the school served as a cultural center for the performing arts, a distinction that continues today with the 2006 dedication of the Kinzer Performing Arts Center and the 2007 dedication of the Renfro Center. Of utmost importance was the school’s first accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities in 1948. Then, with the passage of the Higher Education Code in 1965, the institution received its present name, Northern Oklahoma College, and the three-person Board of Regents was expanded to five members. During the last two decades, Northern has expanded its physical plant, broadened its curriculum, increased its student enrollment, and developed campuses in Enid and Stillwater. Additionally, Northern is a leader among Oklahoma colleges in technological advances in developing multiple on-line and interactive television courses that serve students in rural and remote areas who could not otherwise attain a college degree. The educational achievements of this school and the opportunities it affords for the expansion of knowledge, culture, and training are manifest in the recognition and support currently and historically given it by area residents and businesses, by state agencies, and by Oklahoma peer institutions. In 2011, Northern Oklahoma College celebrated its 110th anniversary. According to the Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C., Northern ranked as one of the top three community colleges in Oklahoma and as one of the top 120 of the country’s 1,200 community colleges. NOC received its largest private donation ever, approximately $1.8 million from the Ima Faythe Berglund estate, and Dr. Cheryl Evans became the first female president. From a single building and 217 students in 1902, Northern has evolved to a multi-campus learning community with approximately 5,000 students in 2011. However, the goal of providing an affordable, accessible and quality education to all who desire it has remained unchanged. The Tonkawa campus, established in 1901, serves as the administrative center for Northern with campuses in Tonkawa, Enid, and Stillwater. All program oversight in academic, financial, student service, personnel, development, physical plant, and information technology is housed in Tonkawa. Some 2,200 students attend class on campus, by ITV, via online, or at technology centers. The Enid campus was established in 1999 in conjunction with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) and the City of Enid. This campus has grown in offering multiple two-year liberal arts degree programs to some 1,200 students each semester. the Enid campus continues to expand its faculty, curriculum, and numerous clubs and activities. The Stillwater campus, established in 2003, serves multiple missions to area students. Primarily a Gateway Program, the Stillwater campus serves students who would otherwise not be admitted to Oklahoma State University. The campus, however, also admits students seeking general education courses that transfer to other comprehensive colleges and universities. Northern Stillwater admits approximately 300 new students each fall and spring semester, serving some 1,700 students.

Northern Oklahoma College has named Ashley Moore interim vice president for academic affairs. Moore’s official start date is July 6.

Moore replaces Dr. Shelly Mencacci, who accepted a position as vice president of advancement at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant.

“We are so excited to have Ashley Moore step into this role during this time of transition in academic affairs for NOC,” said NOC President Diana Morris. “She brings a wide-breadth of experience in professional development, grants management, and multi-campus operations. Her collaborative approach to leadership and broad understanding of academic policy and procedures are the perfect blend to support NOC Staculty and students as we continue to advance our Life Changing mission across all NOC campuses.”

Most recently, Moore served as director of secondary education and district gifted and talented coordinator for Stillwater Public Schools, where she led principals, instructional coaches and college- and career-readiness initiatives.

Her extensive background also includes key state-level leadership roles. She served as executive director of literacy and director of gifted and talented for the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Throughout her career, she has managed multimillion-dollar grant budgets, collaborated with state legislators and launched student education initiatives.

Moore holds a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction from Arizona State University and graduate certificates in building-level leadership from Oklahoma State University and district-level leadership from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oklahoma State University and taught high school English for 14 years.

A lifelong learner, Moore is dedicated to her belief in “Success for every student!” She is currently a doctoral candidate in educational leadership through the OU-Tulsa/CCOSA cohort.

Moore and her husband, Brady, have been married nearly 25 years. They have two daughters: Kinley, who will be a sophomore at the University of Arkansas, and Sadie, who will be a junior at Stillwater High School.

Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa is hosting the 35th Arts Adventure Summer Camp July 13-16. The camp runs from 12:45 - 5:15 pm and is open for incoming 6th graders through those who have just completed high school.

The Northern Oklahoma College Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce the establishment of the Evelyn Coyle Horticulture Student Scholarship Fund.

Through the generous support of Evelyn Scoles Coyle, a 1951 Alumna from Northern Oklahoma Junior College, the establishment of this permanently restricted endowed scholarship fund will provide Horticulture students an opportunity to complete their educational goals at Northern Oklahoma College Tonkawa.

NOC Distinguished Alumna 2021 and long-time Tonkawa, Oklahoma resident, Evelyn Coyle, values higher education and it is her desire to help students pursue their higher educational goals. Ms. Coyle wishes to assist deserving students to be successful in reaching their educational degrees and professional goals.

The scholarship recipient(s) will be selected from candidates submitted by the NOC Horticulture instructor and approved by the NOC Tonkawa Scholarship Committee.

A maximum of $2,000 will be awarded annually to the scholarship recipient(s). This scholarship will be applied toward Northern Oklahoma College program expenses for tuition, fees, books, etc.

Coyle also donated funds establishing the Evelyn Coyle Tonkawa Campus Beautification Project. The campus beautification project was established in conjunction with the 125th Anniversary celebration of NOC Tonkawa.

Tonkawa Campus:

Northern Oklahoma College has awarded Presidential Leadership Scholarships to 12 students and three others received the Oklahoma Rising Scholars Scholarship for NOC Tonkawa for the 2026-27 academic year.

Incoming freshmen planning to attend NOC Tonkawa in fall 2026 on PLC scholarships are Addyson Harmon, Tonkawa; Ali Sneath, Ponca City; Amelia Leatherman, Blackwell; Audrey Varner, Ponca City; Cash Hanrahan, Stillwater; Hattie Bishop, Edmond; Jaxon Teel, Oklahoma City; Justin Penland, Oklahoma City; Katlynn Turner, Oilton; Kyson Inman, Edmond; Lilly Free, Newkirk; Morgan Sechrist, Tuttle; and Rebecca Taylor, Morrison.

Stillwater Campus:

Northern Oklahoma College has awarded NOC/OSU Gateway Scholarships to three students attending NOC Stillwater for the 2026-27 academic year.

Incoming freshmen are Jaryn Dowell, Hennessey; Ella Gilley, Glencoe; and Sophia Rogers, Stillwater.

Each student’s scholarship in the amount of $28,000 for two years will be applied toward tuition, fees, books, on-campus resident housing and meal plan. Applicants must maintain at least a 3.25 grade-point average per semester and enroll in 12 credit hours each semester in an associate degree program.

The Oklahoma Rising Scholar Scholarship, established by the state legislature and governor in 1988 and operated by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, offers a full tuition waiver plus $1,500.00 a semester to cover all major expenses for four years or eight semesters as long as the student attends an Oklahoma institution participating in the program.

This past week, Miss NOC, Alia Dust, and former Miss NOC's stood out at the Miss Oklahoma Pageant.

Dust received a Non-Finalist Talent Award earning her $500; former Miss NOC Tonkawa 2022, Emma Valgora made the Top 15 earning her $2,000; Miss NOC Enid 2022, Mia Jones received a Non-Finalist Talent Award earning her $500; and former Miss NOC 2025, Adysen Thompson won a Congeniality Award earning her $1,000.

Northern Oklahoma College Enid is hosting a free planetarium show at the Mackie Planetarium on Wednesday, June 17, at noon.

The show will demonstrate the Great Planet Adventures as well as what to view in the night sky in the Enid area.

The planetarium may also be reserved for school and community groups.

Twelve girls attended the Northern Oklahoma College Girls’ Basketball Camp for Grades K-3 June 8-10.

Camp director Greg Krause along with assistants Dev-Ann Geary and Avery Strickland worked the three-day event.

Campers included Cassidy Williams, Medford; Hadley Loesch, Medford; Spencer Warwick, Oklahoma City; Baylor Bowling, Tonkawa; Caroline Dice, Tonkawa; Blakely Moore, Tonkawa; Coach Krause, Sutton Simpson, Tonkawa; Tylee Wright, Blackwell; Keslie Stokesberry, Tonkawa; Addison Betzen, South Haven, Kansas; Evanjeline DeNoya, Ponca City; and Henley Atkinson, Perry.

According to Krause, the focus was on introducing basic skills such as dribbling, passing, defensive and varied offensive skills. Lowered goals were used to teach offensive skills.

On the final day, campers demonstrated their skills for their parents. Each girl received a T-shirt, a regulation size basketball and a certificate of completion.

Two more camps are scheduled including Grades 3-6 camp June 21-25 and the Grades 7-12 camp from July 5-9.
