John Burns has invested over 20 years to help shape the Washburn Kinesiology Department into what it is today. In addition to his dedication to teaching and mentoring students, he has provided outstanding leadership and insight as cochair of the department. He has also served as chair of both the Mass Media & Kinesiology Division and the College Faculty Council’s Curriculum Committee since 2023.
Burns’ service efforts have helped shape policy and have guided countless curriculum changes through the shared governance process, making a valuable impact on academic programs across campus.
In addition to robust disciplinary service, Burns serves in a long list of community initiatives including currently being a member of committees or boards for Mid-America Athletic Trainers’ Association, Lawrence Memorial Hospital Concussion Alliance and United Methodist Wesley Campus Ministry for Washburn University and acting as medical commissioner of the Sunflower State Games.

Raised on a farm in Kansas, renowned photographer Larry Schwarm has spent decades capturing rural life in the state. From farmers to prairie burnings, his photographs document the people, places, and practices that make the heartland distinctive. They trace the ways that our interactions with the landscape have both changed and stayed the same over time.
