🔬🎨 Welcome back to our series “The Science of Art!” We will be sharing interesting facts about different art mediums throughout this ongoing series. Today we are continuing to learn about paint types 🖌️.

The ingredients in different paints can determine their appearance, which in turn can influence an artist's choice of medium. The binders in watercolor paints are water soluble. This allows the paints to be stored dry and compact making them an excellent choice for outdoor, also called plein air, painting. However, because the pigments are diluted by the water, the colors are more transparent. It is also harder to make crisp lines because the water soaks into the substrate, spreading the pigment.

KATP registration opens today! The 2026 Kansas Archeology Training Program field school will be hosted in Russell, Russell County, by the Kansas Historical Society and the Kansas Anthropological Association. This year, there will be the opportunity to work on materials and sites from a variety of time periods. There are six areas within 10,000 acres identified as top priorities for field school. These identified areas include a petroglyph carving, a possible tipi ring site, a historic farmstead, a two-story stone structure, and a site related to World War II Air Force history. Most of these sites have not been previously documented or researched. There is also the possibility, through survey work, of discovering additional sites. Register online from now until May 29, 2026 at https://bit.ly/reg2026KATP.

The Washburn History Department reports: "It was another food day for Modern Latin American History, Food Version. After almost a month learning about corporate banana history, we knew we could not look at another Chiquita or Dole banana for a long time, so, platanos and guineos! Students tried guineos (Thai bananas), three kinds of plantain chips, tostones (fried green plantains) with Puerto Rican dipping sauce, and maduros (fried ripe plantains). Even non-banana eaters found a variety to love. And there was music and laughing and a wee bit of dancing in the kitchen/classroom." What a fun and educational study!
