Our last community stop is sammysoap: thank you Karen Copeland, owner of sammysoap, for allowing us to see the behind the scenes of the store!

sammysoap is a purpose-driven business that was created to provide meaningful, community-based employment for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. sammysoap emphasizes real-world experiences and strengths-based employment allowing individuals to build relationships, develop independence, and actively participate in society. This model is important because it fosters a sense or purpose, belonging, and autonomy while breaking down barriers to inclusion, demonstration how inclusive employment can positively impact both individuals and the broader community.

We are grateful for all of our community visits this semester - this is what learning is all about!

Our second to last visit for the Occupational Therapy First Year students Social Enterprise/Workplace field visit is the Independence Center.
The St. Louis Independence Center is a Clubhouse model community program that helps adults with mental illness build skills for independent living, work, and social participation. It connects to occupational therapy by supporting meaningful activity, mental well-being, and promotes INDEPENDENCE in everyday life.
We appreciate all of these community agencies for their tours and hospitality!

Another Social Enterprise Visit by our First Year OT students.

"Wags in a Bag is a social enterprise that offers employment services to adults with disabilities. These services focus on preparing individuals for independence in the workforce by helping them through the process of following a recipe, cooking, and taking their dog treats into the community to sell. Wags in a Bag helps individuals learn life skills, independence, and gain confidence in these skills. They focus on community integration and remain in contact with their participants, even after they get a job."

Thank you Wags in a Bag for hosting our students!
