John ’92 and Amy (Erickson) ’92 Higgins P’28 turned a fallen oak in the yard of their Minneapolis home into a celebration.

One Saturday last June, more than 6,000 people gathered outside their home to watch a 20-foot sculpture shaped like a pencil get sharpened.

“It’s a very Minneapolis thing — inviting friends and strangers onto your lawn for some free, goofy fun.”

More than 30 crafters from across campus and the community created “tempestries” to highlight the yearly temperature changes for significant dates in Colgate’s history for a Longyear Museum of Anthropology exhibition this past spring.

The Colgate Tempestry Project was a year-long collaboration between Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the Environmental Studies Program, the Residential Commons, University Museums, and the Center for Women’s Studies, as well as various other Colgate students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Three Colgate coaches celebrate 20 years in the role.

Ryan Baker, volleyball head coach
“Colgate took a huge chance on me, which is one reason why I am so loyal to them,” Baker said. “I was the youngest D-I head coach in the country at the time."

Bobby Pennington, men's tennis head coach
“It's definitely very humbling,” Pennington said. “It's a big accomplishment. You see so much turnover nowadays in college athletics."

Erik Ronning, men's soccer head coach
“My successes are what my student-athletes have been able to accomplish,” Ronning said. “Results and championships are a product of what we have been able to do.”

Rogue waves are exactly what they sound like: enormous, unpredictable waves that come out of nowhere.

“It could be a seemingly smooth, clear day, and all of a sudden this huge wave will come — which can obviously be problematic for boats or people out on the water,” Olivia Schlegel ’27 explains.

Schlegel and Associate Professor of Mathematics Nick Moore spent the last two summers digging into the mathematical model of wave behavior to identify any predictors that might explain why rogue waves form.

The Class of 2030 participated in a century-old tradition earlier this week. The Founders' Day Convocation officially welcomes the incoming class to Colgate's community of scholars.

Following a formal dinner, bagpipers and faculty members, in full academic regalia, led first-year students inside the chapel for the convocation address.

Meet the Colgate Class of 2030

“Everyone who has a connection to Colgate is ecstatic when they talk to me about their stories there, and they all are still a part of the school today. Not one other college I had on my list had this sense of community and ability to connect people,” George McDonald ’30 says.

"I'm excited to be a part of a community defined by intellectual curiosity, challenging conversations, and compassion," says Maeve Welch ’30.

"I wanted to experience the community of a close-knit campus that allowed me to continue exploring newer avenues for myself, and Colgate offered me that," Landon Solorzano-Gonzalez ’30 says.

"I can’t wait for how Colgate will transform my life in the next four years," says Mercy Nsiah Akuoko ’30.
