What a great week of events for the CIT Department.

On Tuesday, May 9th, we held the 8th Annual IT Academy Olympics with students from the IT Academy program at the Northwest Education Services - formerly TBAISD and from CNET program at the Wexford-Missaukee Career Technical Center. Approximately 100 students participated in four challenge activities. We awarded prizes to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, and every student walked away with a door prize and a swag bag. We couldn't have held this event without the support of our many volunteers, judges, and sponsor organizations.

On Thursday, May 11th, we participated in the MiCareerQuest Northwest (Northwest Michigan Works) and discussed career opportunities in Software Development and Cybersecurity. Students had an opportunity to learn about physical security and even had a chance to play a retro video game.

Finally, on Friday, May 12th, approximately 40 students from the IT Academy program at Northwest Education Services - formerly TBAISD participated in a LAN party at the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center on the grounds of Northwestern Michigan College. Students that successfully demonstrated various technology skills over the school year were given an opportunity to spend the day together playing video games.

Robin Phinizy looked to the CIT program at NMC as a means to further her career when she was first stationed in Traverse City as a Flight Mechanic and Avionics Technician for the Coast Guard.

“My experience with the program so far has been great”, she says. “You have these really great professors, but you also have a resource with the other students here. NMC just has a lot to offer.”

Thank you Safety Net for your continued support of our program.

Not only have you provided employment opportunities for some of our students, you continue to support our program through scholarships and by providing internship opportunities.

In addition, your engagement with our CIT Industry Night Out events and IT Olympics has been instrumental in promoting technology and STEM in the Grand Traverse area.

After interning with Safety Net and specializing in STEM at their Traverse City location, NMC Computer Information Technology graduate Russel Arlt accepted a full-time position with the company.

Have you heard of ISSA? ISSA or the Information Systems Security Association is an international organization whose purpose is to help develop and connect Cybersecurity professionals globally.

Guess what? We have a local chapter right here in Traverse City. They meet about every other month, and if you are someone interested in cyber, you should attend. While there is a yearly student membership fee of $30, you should come to a meeting to get a feel for what it's like. You can connect with other like minded folks in the area that have an interest in Information Systems and Cybersecurity.

Did I mention that they have provided a $2500 scholarship to students. One of NMC's own students was the previous award winner.

You can find out more about the organization by visiting: https://www.issa.org/

The next meeting for the local chapter is Thursday, November 17th at the TBA Credit Union. The event starts at 6:00pm. To reserve a spot and get a ticket, visit: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/grand-traverse-issa-november-meeting-tickets-444909725967
