NMC Faculty and Administration Approve Three-year Contract

TRAVERSE CITY (July 27, 2022) – The unions representing faculty and faculty chairs at Northwestern Michigan College have reached an agreement on three-year contracts that increase faculty salaries by 5% this year and 2% in each of the next two years.

The agreement was ratified by members of the NMC Faculty Association and NMC Faculty Chairs Association last week. The Board of Trustees of Northwestern Michigan College approved the agreement at their meeting on Monday.

All faculty, faculty chairs, and instructional librarians will receive increases of 5 percent effective next month. Salaries will increase two percent for each of the next two years of the contract.

In addition to the across-the-board increases, faculty are eligible for a teaching incentive awarded to faculty members who teach courses in different formats like online, livestream, or hyflex. The incentive award is between $1015 and $2030 per year depending on the formats taught and faculty placement on the step plan. This incentive is not a part of the salary plan and may expire with the contract.

NMC faculty are on a step plan that increases their salary each year until they reach step 15. Newer faculty who are not at step 15 in the plan will receive a step on the plan as a part of their employment agreement. This amounts to a 3.71% increase for those faculty members.

NMC faculty have had a step plan for many years, pre-dating the vote to unionize in 2015. Most NMC staff also have salary step plans, although with fewer steps.

Including all increases – the salary increase, the step increase, and bonus – the lowest paid NMC faculty member will get up to a 12.26% raise this year (step 3) if they qualify for the maximum incentive. The highest paid NMC faculty (step 15) will get a 7.18% raise this year if they qualify for the maximum incentive.

The new contract also includes provisions for instructional librarians who joined the NMC Faculty Association earlier this year.
