“I wrote this little final sendoff to my friends and my family and to everyone that supported me along the way. When I started at Thomas Edison University, I knew I wasn't signing up for a typical college experience. I already earned my associates degree from Bucks County Community College, and now I was working full-time for the New Jersey Department of Health, Office of Vital Statistics and Registry. Campus life wasn't in my cards. My college years played out online, squeezed between work and family responsibilities. Online school was its own challenge. But the flexibility made it possible. I could clock in after a day of handling birth and death records, grab dinner with my wife, and dive straight into the assignments. Sometimes I felt like it was a never-ending loop of work, study and repeat. Never did I do any of this alone though. My wife was my anchor, always reminding me why I started, helping me keep perspective when deadlines piled up. My family and friends had my back, cheering me on when I doubted myself, giving me space when I needed to grind. It meant the world to me to know that they were with me, even if I couldn't make an event. They understood that the class that I was taking wasn't a hobby, but a way to improve. A lot of my drive comes from my roots. My mother and my father had me young, and we're also of Puerto Rican heritage. So, I wanted to make them proud and show that all their hard work led somewhere. There were nights where I felt like quitting. The work was tiring, the classes were demanding, and sometimes I felt like I was missing out on life. But I would think about where I came from, what I and who I was doing this for – myself, my family, my future. Graduating from Thomas Edison wasn't just a personal win. It was proof that with enough determination and a lot, and I mean a lot of support, you can overcome just about anything.” - Joshua Figueroa, B.A. ‘25
