The first frost of the fall has yet to occur anywhere in the state, as 39 degrees is the coldest recorded so far (Goodland, Oct. 2). As you can see from the map below, we are already behind schedule across the northwest. Today is the average day of the first frost in places like Manhattan, Holton and Troy, but we are nowhere near that cold this morning, with temperatures in the 50s.
Is there any expectation of a frost or freeze in the near future? The American medium-range model, the GFS, says the earliest chance for a frost is October 16, while the European model disagrees and says no frost in the next two weeks. It's something to keep an eye on late next week to see how the forecasts pan out.
Until then, today should be the first of what may be 7 or more consecutive days with widespread highs in the 80s across the state. Lows will be in the 50s and 60s. Combined, temperatures will average from 10 to 15 degrees above normal during this stretch.
