RPI Science and Technology Studies

RPI Science and Technology Studies Rensselaer’s STS Department is internationally known for its global reach, theoretical breadth, and ethical engagement.

Science and Technology Studies (STS) is an interdisciplinary field that advances historical, philosophical, and social scientific understandings of science and technology. Faculty and students conduct research around the world, drawing widely on social, political, and literary theory. The Department has particular depth in environmental studies, design studies, feminist analysis, and the anthropol

ogy of science and technology. Rensselaer’s STS faculty play leading roles in the Society for Social Studies of Science, the main professional organization representing the full breadth of STS scholarship. Rensselaer’s STS faculty are also well recognized in disciplines ranging from anthropology, history, and philosophy to psychology, political science, and sociology, and they are active in a wide range of disciplinary organizations such as the American Anthropological Association, the American Sociological Association, and the Society for the History of Technology. Building on the faculty’s diverse disciplinary perspectives and deep interdisciplinarity, the graduate program enables research into questions and problems extending beyond the boundaries of any single discipline. Our graduates produce new understandings of science and technology that can be translated into improved scientific and technological practices and policy outcomes. Alumni of Rensselaer’s STS program are known for their intellectual vitality, collegiality, and commitment to social justice issues.

Congressman Tonko congratulates Professor Abby Kinchy of RPI's STS Department for her new NSF grant! Dr. Kinchy says: “This project will make it possible for communities to investigate soil contamination in their own neighborhoods, understand pathways for exposure, and discover the social and political dimensions of soil pollution and cleanup. As a social scientist, I am proud to lead this multidisciplinary collaboration that involves the natural sciences, engineering, and the arts—as well as community partners in Troy, NY and northern Chile. I believe that collaborating across disciplines, with the public, and across international boundaries is essential if we are to address the urgent environmental challenges that we face today and in the future.”

ALBANY—Congressman Paul D. Tonko announced today that the National Science Foundation (NSF) is awarding Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and SUNY Polytechnic Institute a group of scientific research grants totaling $7,377,474.

“Jim Malazita, an assistant professor of science and technology studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, believes higher education has played a role. He thinks there’s something about how the STEM disciplines are taught — science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — that discourages students from considering ethical questions as they learn the skills they need to work for big technology companies. But if colleges and universities are contributing to the problem, then they can also help fix it.“

An assistant professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hopes to infuse ethics lessons into core computer-science courses.
