School of Science at Rensselaer

School of Science at Rensselaer Welcome to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Science on Facebook. We embrace our educational mission on equal footing to our research mission.

Research and education come together in our students—our undergraduates engage in extensive hands-on, experiential learning, and most experience discovery first-hand through research. Areas of study include: biology, chemistry and chemical biology, computer science, IT and web science, mathematical sciences, earth and environmental sciences, and physics, applied physics, and astronomy. Now streaming on PBS, Project Chapel chronicles the installation of the world's first IBM Quantum System One on a university campus right here at RPI.

The documentary, featuring several of our own SCI faculty and students, follows the transformation of RPI's historic, century-old chapel into a home for cutting-edge quantum innovation and highlights the people, technology, and vision that made the milestone possible.

In early April, some of our SCI students competed in the College-Level Physics Olympiad organized by RIT. This year, 17 teams from a number of universities competed. RPI alone made up 11 of the teams with a total of 31 RPI students participating. Congratulations to RPI students Samin Alam, Even Mackson-Landsberg, and Reese Haley, whose team placed third overall- as well as two RPI teams earning Distinguished Performance recognition (Megan Schlogl, Ben Wertz, Hannah Turner; and David O)!

Our Mathematical Sciences Department recently hosted several colloquium events attended by both students and faculty. In addition to Math/Applied Physics alumna Mallory Gaspard presenting her Ph.D. research in a discussion titled "When is Camouflage Useful? A Case Study in Hover Fly Pursuit-Evasion Interactions,” the department also welcomed Yale Mathematics professor John Schotland as this year's honorary Class of '27 lecturer. John's colloquium, titled “Nonlocal PDEs and Quantum Optics”, gave a general overview of a novel formulation of the equations of quantum electrodynamics for light interacting with excitable atoms as a system of nonlocal partial differential equations.

The 18th Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium took place this past Friday, April 17th. Hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Education, the Symposium showcased research conducted by over 50 undergraduate students across all Schools at RPI. With over 50% of the students presenting coming from the School of Science, it was a great opportunity to see the amazing research our students have been working on!

Last month, 39 student teams from several local colleges & universities competed in the New York Business Plan Competition regionals, New York's largest and most prestigious intercollegiate entrepreneurship competition. Six of the ten winning teams consisted of RPI students, three of which included SCI students! We want to congratulate and recognize the following students for all of the hard work put into their startups and for their wins at NYBPC:
CS/ITWS student Raven Levitt & CS student James Liu with Meridian
CS/ITWS student Heman Kolla with Hkquantum
CS/MATH student Liam Gavin with StarStack

Keep making RPI and the School of Science proud!👏

Follow first year Computational Biology major and RPI swimmer Katie Schloth around campus for a day, the third winner in our video contest!
Katie says, “One of my favorite parts about being an RPI School of Science student is the energy. Everyone is curious and excited to learn. The professors are super approachable, and the office hours have been a huge help. They really take the time to explain things until you get it which I appreciate so much. I’m also grateful for my friends in my classes and swim team who make RPI such a great place to be!”

We had a blast at this past weekend's second Accepted Student Celebration, where prospective students and their families got to take tours of campus, meet students and faculty from each department, and more. During our Undergraduate Research Panel, several of our current Science students shared how they got into research and highlighted the pivotal role that experiential learning has played in their time at RPI. Thank you to those who came to campus, and congratulations accepted students! We hope to see you on campus again this fall. 😉
