Big thanks to everyone who joined us at Sagehen Creek Field Station for a day full of connection, science, and inspiration.

We celebrated the dedication of our newly renovated library, explored cutting-edge research from (bee viruses in the Sierra) and subramanyan (wildlife ecology), and saw the Sagehen Outdoor Education Program in action with local 5th gradersβ€”made possible through amazing partnerships with (Tahoe Institute for Natural Science) and (Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships).

Guests also toured the weather station and learned about long-term climate monitoring from our partners at (CSSL). We’re especially excited about future collaborations with and the growing research community across the Central Sierra Field Stations.

Huge thanks to our generous donor family and to the UC Berkeley alumni and Tahoe-Truckee community members who help make all this possible. Onward!

We’re excited to welcome Tim Brown as the new director of Sagehen Creek Field Station! Tim brings a wealth of expertise in Sierra Nevada ecology and a deep connection to the UC Natural Reserve System. He’s eager to support research, teaching, and the Tahoe-Truckee community. Welcome, Tim!

Tim Brown, an ecologist with a long history of working within the NRS, is the new director of Sagehen Creek Field Station. He got introduced to the reserve system as an undergraduate during field courses at UC Santa Cruz. After graduating, he returned as a Restoration Field Manager at Younger Lagoon Reserve. His doctoral research, supported in part by an NRS Mathias Graduate Student Research Grant, focused on how the gray-crowned rosy-finch makes a living at the highest altitudes of the Sierra Nevada. His work has contributed to understanding the ecological and evolutionary responses of alpine songbirds to climate change. Welcome back to the NRS, Tim!

Mark your calendars! The 29th Annual Truckee River Day and River Fair are coming up on Sunday, October 20th and we hope to see you all there!

Restoration projects begin at 9am and 11am and are open for all ages and abilities.
Activities like spreading native seed, planting willows, mulching, building beaver dams, improving trails and stabilizing streambanks help to recharge groundwater, increase moisture to vegetation that supports critical habitat, and keeps water flowing in our streams later into the dry season.

Registration ends on October 11th. Head to www.truckeeriverwc.org to sign up!
