We are excited to announce speaker Saira Kalia, MD, presenting on “When Worry Takes Over: Practical Management of Anxiety in the Perinatal Period” for the free and virtual Oct. 30 Training Transformative Mental Healthcare Teams Conference.

Dr. Kalia is a perinatal psychiatrist and the director of the Arizona Psychiatry Access Lines. Her presentation will guide providers in caring for expectant mothers struggling with anxiety.

This conference qualifies for up to 4 continuing education credits.

Shout out to our Department Chair Jordan Karp, MD, and his fellow editors at The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry for their leadership in scribing the in-depth and thoughtful editorial, “On the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Publishing.”

Published on Sept. 30, the editorial eloquently dives into a nuanced discussion of protecting human creativity and originality, preserving research expertise, and maintaining scientific integrity in service of patient care.

In August, after 29 years of service as a faculty provider with our department, Joanna Katsanis PhD, associate clinical professor of psychiatry, concluded her clinical role with Banner Health and transitioned to private practice. Dr. Katsanis is a psychologist who’s clinical and research contributions have been recognized with awards from the International Congress on Schizophrenia Research and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders.

During her years with the department, she also received teaching awards from psychology interns and child and adolescent psychiatry fellows. Her scholarly work has appeared in leading national and international journals, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Biological Psychiatry, and the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Dr. Katsanis will continue as faculty with our Residency and Child and Adolescent psychiatry Fellowship programs while expanding her private psychology practice. As part of this next chapter, she will also continue providing psychotherapy through school-based clinics on the Navajo Nation.
