On September 26, students, faculty, and friends of the college gathered for the 2026 Scholarship & Fellowship Recognition Luncheon. This annual event offers a special opportunity for distinguished scholars to connect with their generous donors, celebrate their academic accomplishments, and share their hopes and goals for the future.

This marks another year of solidifying a commitment to student success, with 174 Coit College of Pharmacy students receiving scholarships, a financial commitment of over $900,000. This support is critical to student success. “As a student from an Arizona high school, I personally benefited from available funding, which made a meaningful difference in my education. We strongly believe our contributions are a valuable investment in a student's future and, ultimately, in professionals who will serve our state. We plan to continue our support, as connecting with students remains a major source of encouragement for us,” said Alan Barreuther, PharmD, class of 1973.

PharmD Ambassador Spotlight: Iliana Bustamante

Iliana Bustamante, a Doctor of Pharmacy candidate, is passionate about expanding her pharmacy knowledge and using her future career to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. A U of A alumna, Iliana chose the Coit College of Pharmacy for its strong reputation in research, connections to faculty, and the sense of community she has known since growing up near campus. As a PharmD Ambassador, she is excited to inspire future pharmacists, represent the profession, and connect with others who share her passion for pharmacy. With current interests in hospital pharmacy, oncology, and pediatrics, Iliana hopes to pursue a residency and serve patients in specialized areas of care, while remaining open to the many opportunities the profession offers.

Nick McKee, of the Tan Lab, Featured in Cell Press! A major milestone for open science is taking shape at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, led by Dr. Travis Wheeler. The Coit College of Pharmacy has announced a $1.8 million gift from the Genetic Information Research Institute to support the merger of Repbase and Dfam, two foundational resources for transposable element research, into a single, fully open-access framework. Wheeler, an associate professor at the College, has been working toward this vision since 2011, alongside collaborators including A***n Smit and Robert Hubley. His goal was straightforward but ambitious: make a foundational genomic resource freely available to researchers everywhere. Now, Repbase’s decades of expert curation and Dfam’s open, scalable infrastructure are coming together to create an even more powerful resource for the scientific community.

The significance reaches far beyond databases, as transposable elements are central to understanding evolution, gene innovation, cancer, aging and the biology of genomes. Dfam already contains transposable-element information for more than 6,000 species, and the resource continues to grow. The integration will also bring new curation tools, computational methods, workshops and training opportunities to researchers around the world. For Wheeler, this is the culmination of more than a decade of work to make critical genomic knowledge accessible without fees or restrictions. As he put it, “Thirty years of expert knowledge has been sitting behind a paywall, and now it won't be,” marking an important new chapter for open genomic science.

Rick G. Schnellmann, PhD, professor and Howard J. Schaeffer Endowed Chair in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the R. Ken Coit College of Pharmacy, continues to expand the reach of mitochondrial research across kidney disease, Parkinson’s disease, cancer, stroke and pain. In the past 19 months, Schnellmann has authored or co-authored 24 research papers, building on decades of research and more than $38 million in NIH funding since 1987.

His recent work explores kidney-targeted therapies for diabetic kidney disease, potential treatments for Parkinson’s-related cognitive decline, strategies to protect kidneys during cancer treatment, and new approaches to stroke and non-opioid pain management. Across these areas, Schnellmann’s research remains focused on a common goal: translating discoveries in mitochondrial biology into potential therapies that can improve patient care.
