A research collaboration that began during a sabbatical in Japan is offering new insight into how the brain forms and maintains memories.

BIO5 member Amelia Gallitano and collaborators studied a gene involved in learning and memory, finding that increasing its activity may strengthen memory. The findings could help researchers better understand changes in memory associated with aging, dementia and mental health conditions.

Better treatments for epilepsy begin with understanding the genetics behind the disease. 🧬

As one of the 2026 BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellows, Erfan Bahramnejad is studying how genetic changes influence the severity of SCN8A-related epilepsy under the mentorship of BIO5 member Michael Hammer University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson.

By uncovering why some genetic variations lessen disease severity, Bahramnejad’s research could open new possibilities for treating patients with drug-resistant forms of epilepsy.

Through the BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellowship, he'll receive advanced training in genomic research while building the foundation for an independent research program dedicated to understanding the genetic mechanisms of epilepsy.

Bartlett investigates an entirely different strategy focused on how the lymphatic system is affected by aging and Alzheimer's disease, with the goal of developing therapies that could potentially slow or reverse disease progression

As a 2026 BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellow, Ugur Kilic is developing a non-invasive brain stimulation approach that combines advanced imaging with complementary therapies to better understand and treat pain after stroke under the mentorship of BIO5 member Julie Pilitsis at University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson.

The BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellowship will help Kilic expand her expertise in neuromodulation and brain imaging while advancing her goal of developing new therapies for neurological rehabilitation.

The future of medicine is personalized, and brain health is no exception. 🧠

As one of the 2026 BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellows, Yilin Liu is developing more personalized brain stimulation treatments for Alzheimer's disease and age-related cognitive decline under the mentorship of BIO5 member Ying-Hui Chou at University of Arizona College of Science.

By combining brain imaging, machine learning and non-invasive brain stimulation, her research aims to better understand why treatments work for some patients but not others, paving the way for more individualized care.

Some of nature's best solutions are already growing around us. 🌱

2026 BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellow Kamila Murawska-Wlodarczyk studies how plants, soils and microorganisms shape the cycling of trace elements under the mentorship of BIO5 member Alicja Babst-Kostecka University of Arizona College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences.

One trace element, selenium, is essential for human health and increasingly important for emerging technologies. But at elevated concentrations, it can become an environmental hazard. Murawska-Wlodarczyk's research could lead to more sustainable approaches for environmental remediation and resource recovery while helping restore degraded ecosystems.

Through the BIO5 Postdoctoral Fellowship, she is expanding her research with the goal of advancing the sustainable management of critical elements and the restoration of degraded environments.

This year-long fellowship supports early-career researchers through interdisciplinary mentorship and professional development opportunities.
