Dean Jason Kreag was recently a guest on APAAC Across Arizona Podcast. He and the Criminal Division Chief at the Arizona Attorney General's Office Nick Klingerman examined what happens after the verdict in a criminal case. Contrary to TV portrayals of cases going from crime to trial in a week, real criminal cases may not be resolved for years, with post-conviction proceedings extending the case longer.

Last week, the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law welcomed new faces to campus, kicking off the college’s 111th academic year with 109 students in JD programs.

A diverse group, the entering class includes students representing 50 undergraduate institutions, 21 states, two Native Nations and three countries.

Mason Hagemann is stepping into his role as 2026–27 Student Bar Association president with a clear mission: get more students involved and give back to the community. The Phoenix native shares his goals for this year, advice for incoming first-year law students, and why he thinks every law student should join a club.

"My goal is to leave SBA with a greater focus on charity. I believe SBA has done a great job in growing and representing the student community. However, there is room to grow on getting students involved both in the law school, and the greater Tucson community."

Orientation Week has come to a close with our newest LawCats giving back to the community.

Together, they packed over 2,886 boxes of food, totaling more than 43,000 pounds, for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, a fitting start to their legal education and a reminder that service is at the heart of the legal profession.

We are so proud of our new LawCats and cannot wait see them and all of our students back on campus next week!

This designation, granted by the Age-Friendly University Global Network, highlights the U of A’s commitment to promoting positive and healthy aging and enhancing the lives of older members of the global community.

The U of A’s Innovations in Aging Graduate Interdisciplinary Program helped lead the university’s efforts to earn this designation. The multicollege, transdisciplinary program brings together researchers, professors, and leaders from across disciplines to share knowledge, develop solutions, and address the needs of an aging population.

By 2034, Census Bureau data suggest that Americans age 65 and older will outnumber those under 18 for the first time. The U of A is helping prepare for that future through collaboration, research, and education.
