Arizona/NASA Space Grant Consortium We are a NASA-sponsored organization dedicated to promoting STEM education in Arizona.

Our consortium, led by a statewide team of managers and affiliate representatives, is part of The National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program, established by Congress in 1989. Space Grant contributes to the nation's science enterprise by implementing research, education and public service projects through a national network of university-based Space Grant consortia. Nationally, the Space Grant network has 830 affiliate members from academia, industry, government agencies, the military and nonprofit institutions. 31 of these are partners of Arizona's Space Grant Consortium.

🚀 Alumni Highlight: Zachary Howe!

Meet Zachary Howe, an Embry-Riddle Space Grant alumnus who participated in the program from 2021–2023 and graduated in 2023 with a B.S. in Aeronautical Sciences!

During his undergraduate career, Zachary contributed to several Space Grant projects, including the ASCEND high-altitude ballooning program and the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project. Today, he puts his skills to work as a Drone Pilot with FulcrumAir! 🛸

Reflecting on his experience with Space Grant, Zachary shared:
💬 “During my time with the Space Grant Program, I was able to use the skills I learned in classes about drone systems and apply them practically in a field scenario. As a team member for ASCEND, we wanted live data from each launch. I was able to apply my skills in drone subsystems, and we built our own tracking ground station to view video, temperature, and altitude data from the launch site.
Now, as a traveling drone pilot, I use what I learned from those ASCEND launches to troubleshoot technical issues and communicate with designers and engineers on fixes and tweaks.”

We love seeing how hands-on Space Grant experiences help students build real-world skills that carry into their careers! 🌟

Congratulations, Zachary, and thank you for sharing your story! We wish you continued success in your career.

💫University students - lend a hand and receive a $200 stipend!

The Institute of Competition Sciences is looking for university students to review submissions for their Build The Moon Challenge! Here are the details:

Eligibility: junior, senior, or graduate students with relevant coursework, professional work, or extracurricular activities (aerospace, engineering, material science, or related studies).

Dates: One hour of training on Thursday, November 5; term runs November 17-29, 2026

Expected Commitment: ~10 hours over a twelve-day period

Responsibilities: Reviewers will conduct a preliminary round of reviews of the submitted materials based upon a scoring rubric provided by the competition management.

Compensation: Each reviewer will receive a $200 stipend for their support of the BTMC.

Arizona Space Grant loves the Build the Moon Challenge, and has helped support several teams across the state with K-12 classroom kits to participate in the program. What a great way to now get our university students involved!

Highlighting Space Grant Alumni, Audrey! Audrey is a NAU/NASA Space Grant student who had the opportunity to attend and present in Poland over the summer!
“The research I present at Asteroids, Comets, Meteors (ACM) is lab based studies of water and water isotopes’ v***r pressure. I look at my samples both pure and in mixtures. This is helpful when looking at D/H ratios from telescope data and for modeling the evolution of the solar system.” ☄️🔭

🔬🌍 Look who we spotted in the University of Arizona news! 🎉

Congratulations to Supriya Roy, a 2024–26 UA Space Grant alum, who was recently featured for her incredible experience as a BRAVO! Summer in Cambridge researcher!

Through BRAVO! (Biology Research Abroad: Vistas Open!), an immersive international research program for UA undergraduates, Supriya spent her summer at the University of Cambridge, working in the VISIONLab under the supervision of Prof. Sarah Bohndiek and Dr. Stephen Mead.

Her research focused on developing an image-analysis framework to identify spatial biomarkers that could help distinguish low- and high-risk states of esophageal cancer and support earlier detection. 🧬🔬

This digital pathology approach could one day help reduce the need for staining, ease the workload of histopathologists, and even be integrated into endoscopes for real-time identification of cancerous lesions during diagnostic procedures.

🌟 Way to go, Supriya! We’re so proud to see UA Space Grant scholars taking their research abroad.
