🥹 Former Native SOAR students — Amaya, Nashayla, and Anthony — returned last week to represent Native SOAR at the UA Campus Community Connections Finding Community Welcome Event and the Native American Student Services Open House!

By sharing their experiences, connecting students & families to resources, and providing valuable college-going information, our former students are helping pave the way for the next generation of Wildcats!

❤️💙 Thank you, Amaya, Nashayla, and Anthony, for continuing to uplift our community! ❤️💙

FA26 NATIVE SOAR WELCOME

We wrapped up our first week of classes with a beautiful, student-led welcome and blessing!

✨Anthony Escalante (Spring 2026 NS cohort) and Kendrick Begay (Fall 2024 NS cohort) grounded us through songs, reflections, and words of encouragement. Thank you both for helping us begin the semester in a good way—honoring one another, our communities, and the land.✨

Special thank you to our College of Education family for your continued support and commitment to creating spaces where we can learn, grow, and thrive together.

And shoutout to Anthony for being featured on AZPM!

“I wanted to be more involved in Native communities, meet more people and to become more confident in my Native identity. While I already had a reason for joining Native SOAR, when I read about the purpose of their program, it truly validated my decision to take this course. Additionally, as a first-generation Native student, their purpose motivated me to help students who are in the shoes I once was in.“

“I remember my first class for Native SOAR. I walked in and the environment was very welcoming. I joined during the second week of classes, and everyone seemed to be comfortable with one another, which gave me a sense of belonging, different from all the groups that I’ve interacted with here at the UA.”

“I have never felt so connected to a course. I enjoyed how community and collaboration were the foundation. I enjoyed participating...I felt like my perspectives were always heard and considered. Felise is an incredible instructor whose care is felt and I liked how she made sure to connect with each and every student. I enjoyed the readings and discussing them in class; they added to how I understood what was taught and it interested me enough to read the whole article or book.”

NATIVE STUDENT SUCCESS with TUSD NASS

Last week, Native SOAR was invited to engage with Tucson Unified’s Native American Student Services (NASS) team. Using the AMAZING digital stories created by former SP26 mentors, Anthony & Amaya, the NASS team identified key factors and best practices for supporting Native students and their families. The interactive presentation gave everyone the opportunity to consider how they also contribute to student success on an individual and collective basis.

✨Thank you, Native American Student Services, for the invitation to share! And THANK YOU for the work you do EVERY day to support the next generation of leaders. We look forward to seeing your high school students on our campus this semester!✨

💖Special thank you to Anthony & Amaya for continuing to gift Native SOAR with your stories. What a joy it is to share your voices and experiences! Can’t wait to see you again soon!💖
