10/30/2020
Hey all, As you may be aware there will be protests against Pet Land this weekend and for future weekends. If you decide to attend (please attend) please wear a mask and practice distancing etc. Below is information regarding the protests:
Petland Tulsa Protest Information (Details Subject to Change)
I know this is a long post, but I promise it is informative. If you intend to come protest the opening of Petland on Saturday, October 31 or Sunday, November 1, please make sure to read everything carefully.
SCHEDULE
We plan to protest Petland every Saturday and Sunday (at least) from now until they leave. Opening weekend will undoubtedly be the largest effort. While we don’t know exactly what to expect, we do anticipate (possibly) a few hundred people.
Protest efforts will be broken down into three shifts on Saturday (10/31) and two shifts on Sunday (11/01). Choose what works best for your schedule or come and go as you please. Any time dedicated to raising awareness of Petland and their practices is appreciated.
Times may change slightly based on Petland's opening weekend schedule.
Saturday:
9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
5 – 9/close p.m.
Sunday:
11 – 3 p.m.
3 – 6/close p.m.
LOCATION
Petland is located at 10908 E. 71st St., Tulsa, OK 74133. There are sidewalks in the front and west side of the building. Protestors must stay on the sidewalks as it’s considered public property.
When you arrive, we recommend finding a shift leader (green shirts) for a sign and a shirt if you didn’t pick them up in advance. These will also be the people you direct any questions or media to.
PARKING
We suggest finding public parking lots to park your car, using ride-sharing services or Tulsa Transit. Public parking includes parks and schools, but will involve some walking. For that reason, Uber, Lyft or Tulsa Transit is recommended. There is a Tulsa Transit stop right in front of Petland (Stop ID: 6933, Bus 470).
We are trying to find some privately-owned businesses nearby that will allow us to park cars. We will update you on that later!
SIGNS
We are making signs and banners for you to hold/use during the protest. If you choose to make your own signs, we ask that you refrain from any profanity or graphic material. Suggestions for slogans and signs will be posted later for ideas.
Advance pick up information for signs will be posted later.
SHIRTS
We will be making shirts, and they will be for protestors only. We are asking for $5 to cover the cost of the shirt. The shirts will be bright blue. If you’re unable to get one in advance, please consider wearing a bright blue shirt to match.
Advance pick up information for shirts will be posted later.
GROUND RULES
• Our number one rule is to remain peaceful, civil and abide all laws.
• Do not enter the street or private parking lots during the protest. Remain on public areas, like the sidewalks.
• Do not bring pets to the protest. It will be too chaotic, and they could get hurt.
• Do not use profanity or graphic material on signs or in chants.
• Do not discard trash or litter on the ground. Organizers have to clean up after.
• Please be respectful to all nearby businesses.
• Per Tulsa ordinances, masks will be required and social distancing should be observed where possible.
Above all, be peaceful and respectful to all you come into contact with – businesses, law enforcement, possible Petland customers. Anything less paints our cause and efforts in a bad light and detracts from our goal.
BEYOND OPENING WEEKEND
We expect opening weekend to be the biggest in terms of turnout, but efforts will be ongoing every weekend until Petland closes up shop.
We hope to get other rescue groups involved in organizing weekend protests, but all efforts will be posted in this group as well.
More information will be available as details are finalized.
