Drawing 1 with Professor Rafferty has just completed our first project of the semester! Students collaboratively assembled a still life installation including objects that they contributed. The class worked together to construct the setup, which included reflective mirrors and a challenging variety of textures and forms to draw. Here are some of the pieces from our first critique!

This class is offered both spring and fall semesters. It is a Quad 1 class with no prerequisites open to all majors at UTulsa, and no prior experience is necessary to take this course!

Announcing the first exhibition of the new season in the Alexandre Hogue Gallery, featuring the work of UTulsa alumnus Josh Butts (BFA ’09)!

The artist’s talk will be followed directly by a reception from 6:00 to 7:00pm.
Refreshments will be served.

LIGHT•WEIGHT is a new series of landscape paintings completed during the artist’s time living in Wyoming. Working in the tradition of American Regionalists like Thomas Hart Benton and Alexandre Hogue, Butts treats the landscape as design elements—tight, faceted, textured, and intentional.

Walt Whitman traversed this same ground in 1871 and saw not desolation but design: “the rocks in grotesque shapes, the buttes.”

Light•Weight picks up that same correspondence: erosion as a record of endurance, stone as a way of talking about what it costs to hold together under pressure, and what’s left standing once you do.

The exhibition will remain on view September 3–October 1, 2026, in the Alexandre Hogue Gallery.

Last week we started off the fall semester with a UTulsa Art tradition, our sketchbook making workshop! Prof. Martin guided art students through creating a handmade book to be filled with sketches and art ideas! Then on Saturday, the UTulsa School of Art, Design & Art History showed recent student artwork and designs at the Maker Faire Tulsa in a pop-up exhibition, R2-D2 even stopped by our booth!

Speaking of robots, our Fab Lab Tulsa art student interns Austin Nguyen and Ava Boswell helped to fabricate a model of “Makey,” the Faire’s mascot!

Congrats to all the students that exhibited artwork in the department’s Senior Show this year. Thank you from the faculty and staff in the department that had the opportunity to work these seniors. I hope you all know how much it means to us to see you grow as artists and people. Professor Farnum’s Photography Studio class (Art 4153) had a critique today for their assignment focused on printing with sheets of inkjet transparency film. Their artwork was installed in the windows in Phillips Hall 310 and used in light boxes. Items are still in view in 310, if you need a break from studying or working on final projects. Artists include Mia Wright, Camden Goff, Madison Kowal, Bianca Worley, Abigail Ott, Yasmine Enge, Alyssia King, Olive Lauderback, and Margarita Harrison.

TU Art alumni: Please submit your work for inclusion in the upcoming TU Alumni Show, in the Hogue Gallery this Fall!

The exhibition will feature artwork from multiple generations of TU Art alumni in all mediums. We welcome submissions of painting, drawing, video, photography, collage, graphic design, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, and more.

Entry deadline: August 16, 2026

Each artist may enter a maximum of three (3) artworks for consideration. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email by September 4, 2026.

We look forward to receiving your submissions! The alumni exhibition is a great way to showcase your work to the Tulsa arts community, reconnect with your alma mater, and build connections with current art & design students at TU.
