In order to support your students, and specifically your students of color who likely feel unsafe in our country due to a set of unpatriotic attacks fueled by racism. - A resource guide to support teachers the day after a group of domestic terrorists (that consisted of mostly white supremacists and Neo-Nazis) stormed the capitol.

Now is not the time to be silent and complacent. That behavior is part of the problem. It’s time to have uncomfortable conversations with our students that directly impact their lives and well-being.

GV asked their 3rd grade students, “What questions do you have?” on 1/7/2021 We welcome this guest post from Dr. Alyssa Hadley-Dunn, Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Michigan…

An important (yet uncomfortable) article to review and digest.

“While many white educators want to believe that race plays no role in their interactions with students, Oglesby notes that “when a white teacher can say she doesn’t see race when she sends students to discipline, she is exempting herself from being held accountable for her racist behaviors.”

When white educators refuse to admit or understand their role in weaponizing whiteness, when they insist that they didn’t mean any harm or re-center themselves as victims, they don’t just prevent a reparation of the harm that’s occurred. They inflict further damage.

“I’ve witnessed white women state that they felt afraid of a black male student,” Oglesby recounts. “I’ve seen white female teachers leave a classroom visibly upset because ‘students were picking on her,’ even though she failed to build trusting relationships with those students,” she says. “In each of these situations, students served in-school suspensions for getting angry and calling the teachers out.”

It's time to recognize and stop the pattern.

With the election coming next week, everyone, including kids, will be bombarded with stories that relate to racism and injustice. In case you have kids (or students) and want to have a convo with them about this - here's a new Sesame Street Episode on PBS that tackles Racial Justice.

Designed for families to watch together, in this special Elmo, Abby, and their friends Tamir and Gabrielle prepare for a virtual community singalong to stand up to racism. They learn how to be “upstanders” by expressing love, kindness, and respect.
