Welcome, Flor Lozada, to your first year in Social and Cultural Studies concentration in the University of Alabama's Instructional Leadership Ph.D.! We are proud to have a proud bilingual Puertorriqueña and Legacy Scholar Mentor as a part of ! Flor tells us,
"Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York (until I was 12 years old). Then I moved to Puerto Rico, where I completed the remaining of my K-12 education. After almost 13 years of an academic break, I returned to the higher education environment in 2014. I completed a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in biology at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico Guayama campus. Due to previous participation in a REU internship at The University of Alabama, I connected with Dr. Marco Bonizzoni and his research group and decided to further my academic preparation towards a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry (and joined his group). Between research, teaching undergraduate students, and presenting in conferences, I realized that my passion was more towards the students. What pushed me towards the possibility of becoming a professor was the wanting to interact and work with students, especially within the diverse community. With this realization, I completed my master’s degree in chemistry and started walking a new path, the path of an academic advisor working with students at The University of Alabama. I get to advise, guide, and share my story towards supporting students in their journey to success. In this new direction came the need to become educated towards becoming a more efficient leader/advocate for our student community, especially the underrepresented/minority fraction (Hispanic-Latino). With this I decided to join the Instructional Leadership program with a concentration in social and cultural studies."
