First-Gen & Fearless ✨

From Colorado to the Capstone, Ciara Andrew found opportunity, community and a path she never imagined through the Accelerated Master’s Program at The University of Alabama.

While earning her bachelor’s degree in operations management, Ciara also began working toward her master’s — saving both time and money through AMP. Along the way, she’s represented Culverhouse as a first-generation student leader, served as a resident advisor and gained hands-on experience through an internship with McKesson Corporation.

“With AMP, I have the opportunity to accomplish something I never thought possible.”

May is National Inventors Month 💡—a time to celebrate the ideas and breakthroughs shaping the future.

At the University of Alabama, innovation is happening every day in labs across campus, where faculty and students work side by side to turn research into real-world impact. From new discoveries to emerging technologies, UA’s culture of collaboration is driving meaningful invention forward.

That momentum is reflected in UA’s growing patent activity and nationally recognized faculty inventors, including leaders in engineering and robotics pushing solutions from concept to commercialization.

One standout example is Dr. Vishesh Vikas and the Agile Robotics Lab, where research in soft robotics and bio-inspired systems has led to patented technologies like the “Second Spine” exosuit—now moving toward real-world application.
