As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life, libraries could play an important role in helping communities understand how it works, how it can be used and the ethical questions it raises.

Dr. Yuan Li, Dr. Bharat Mehra and Dr. Jack Lipei Tang have received a $199,994 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to explore how libraries can strengthen public understanding of artificial intelligence.

As an assistant professor of book arts at the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), Kyle Clark explores the history of books through bookbinding, preservation and the close examination of books as physical objects. His approach to the craft has now earned international recognition.

Clark received second place in the Fine Binding category of the Society of Bookbinders International Competition 2026 for his binding of Imagine a Beautiful Book: The American Academy of Bookbinding 1993–2013.

The biennial competition showcases contemporary and historic bookbinding from around the world. Clark’s recognition highlights the continued possibilities of a centuries-old craft and its ability to preserve the past while evolving as an artistic practice.
