The Multicultural Journalism Workshop is off to a great start!

The workshop kicked off with dinner at Mellow Mushroom, a visit to Harrison Galleries and a concert at Government Plaza.

On Saturday, Jonathan Norris of Jonathan Norris Photography spoke to the staff about photography and photo editing. Drew Daws, one of our counselors, also gave a lesson on writing and AP Style.

On Sunday, the group visited Moundville Archaelogical Park, a Native American heritage site. The theme for this year's paper centers around the history of Alabama, so this was a great place to visit!

The MJW team has been busy in Birmingham the past few days!

We attended the Alabama Media Professionals Spring Workshop, where many industry professionals got to share their experiences and talk to us about solidarity and movement journalism.

We also attended the National Society of Newspaper Columnists national conference, where our fearless leader Meredith Cummings gave an amazing presentation on turning dream projects into reality! Afterwards, 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner in Commentary John Archibald sat down with the students to talk about his journey in the industry.

The students also got to visit Dotdash Meredith where they toured the test kitchens used for Southern Living. Thanks to Tara Massouleh McCay for this opportunity!

We also got to tour Gulf States Newsroom, where the managing editor Priska Neely taught us all about public radio.

The students also got to go shopping at The Summit, get Steel City Pops, and go roller skating!
