development opportunities, including opportunities within the Cooperative Education Program. Cooperative (Co-op) Education at The University of Alabama:

In order to promote, encourage, and improve the education of students and to provide maximum service to industry, business, and government agencies, the University offers qualified students’ opportunities to participate in the Cooperative Education Program (or co-op). Cooperative education is an academic program in which students alternate periods of full-time study with periods of full-time employment. This program offers work related to the academic major or career interests of each student, greatly enhancing the students’ employment prospects after graduation.

About his experience, Robbie said:

“Completing a co-op was the best professional development step I’ve taken in a while at UA, and I both thoroughly enjoyed the experience and benefited greatly from it. I was given exciting projects to stretch and grow my engineering knowledge and expertise, and met some amazing people along the way.
It is a bittersweet goodbye to a place that I called home for three semesters. I am incredibly blessed and very grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to the Bibb County Battery Plant, and will always look back on the experience with a smile.”

Emily Gokie recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. She completed her Co-op through the NASA Pathways program. About her experience, Emily said the following:

“I completed four rotations at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. I’ve worked on test stands for heat exchangers, rheological testing for heat shields, FEA modelling for structures, simulation and analysis, and more. I’ve used many tools that I have learned throughout my degree - ranging from CAD, MATLAB, additive manufacturing, and machining techniques.
I will be continuing work as a NASA Pathways Co-op this summer and have plans to pursue a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at CU Boulder starting in the fall.”

Do you ever wonder what it’s like on the job in a co-op or internship? Drew Casingal graduated last weekend with a Master of Business Administration after completing his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
He shares his experience as a Co-op with GAF:

“I’m grateful for my co‑op with GAF Materials Corp. Nothing prepares you for an engineering career quite like stepping into a real manufacturing environment. Real plant experience, real engineering challenges, real teamwork. I was lucky to work with incredible people who made the tough days easier and the good days even better.

For any engineering student considering the co‑op program, take the leap! Applying what you learn in class and working alongside the people who bring designs to life is an experience you can’t replace. Textbooks can only take you so far; being in a manufacturing plant brings everything into focus. You’ll grow. You’ll fail. You’ll learn. You’ll fail again. You’ll get better, and you’ll walk away with a whole new understanding of what engineering really looks like.“
