Dr. Edward M. Potter, Class of 1926, represents a legacy that spans nearly the entire history of Tyler Junior College. As a member of TJC’s very first class and the founder of Las Mascaras, his impact on the college began from the very start.

After building a strong foundation at TJC, Dr. Potter graduated with highest honors from the University of Texas at Austin and went on to earn his master’s degree in history. In 1954, he received an honorary doctorate from East Texas Baptist College.

After college, he married his long-time school and college sweetheart, Myra Brooks, who was also a member of TJC’s first class. The couple made their home in Tyler, where he was named principal of Douglas Elementary School.

During World War II, he served his country as an intelligence officer in the Army Air Corps, contributing as a historical editor in Guam. Following the war, he returned to TJC, where he would shape generations of students as assistant dean, dean, and later vice president.

His dedication didn’t end at retirement. Dr. Potter continued serving TJC as a member of the Board of Trustees for nearly two decades, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the college and its future.

In honor of his decades of dedication, the Academic Building was renamed Potter Hall in 1973—a lasting tribute to a man who gave 76 years to the college he loved.

100 years ago today...

The idea of a junior college in Tyler began to take shape. On May 27, 1926, the Tyler Daily Courier-Times announced community support for creating a junior college, calling on local citizens to help fund the vision. What started as a bold idea to expand educational opportunities for East Texans would eventually grow into Tyler Junior College — a place that has impacted generations of students over the last century. 💛🎓

Before becoming a nationally known journalist, Sarah McClendon proudly served her country during World War II.

A graduate of Tyler Junior College’s second graduating class in 1928, McClendon worked with the War Department during the war and became one of the few women reporting on military and defense issues in Washington. Her determination, patriotism, and fearless spirit helped open doors for future generations of women in journalism and public service.
