Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. solemnly commemorates the 105th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre — a deliberate act of terror that sought to erase Black life, Black wealth, and Black political power in Greenwood, the historic “Black Wall Street.”

As we honor the memory of those who were killed and the community that was destroyed, we also recognize the comparable theme from 1921 to today. The same fear of Black advancement that fueled the violence in Tulsa echoes in modern efforts to weaken Black political influence — including restrictive voting laws, aggressive voter roll purges, and policies that disproportionately silence communities of color.

For Phi Beta Sigma, this anniversary is not only a moment of remembrance — it is a call to vigilance. The legacy of Tulsa demands that we confront every attempt, past or present, to suppress our communities’ power. It demands that we continue the work of protecting access to the ballot, strengthening civic engagement, and defending the hard‑won rights our ancestors fought to secure.

This June, we reflect on how the foundational principles of American civil rights continue to evolve to meet the demands of modern justice.
In June 2020, the legal definition of equality in the American workplace was fundamentally strengthened. In its landmark Bostock v. Clayton County decision, the Supreme Court ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964—the landmark law passed to dismantle systemic discrimination based on race, color, religion, s*x, or national origin—safeguards LGBTQ+ employees nationwide.
By anchoring this decision directly into the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the ruling honored a timeless constitutional truth: that core civil protections must expand dynamically to shield all people from institutional bias and arbitrary economic harm.
True social justice relies on the continuous work of aligning our legal systems with human dignity. As we mark this anniversary, we recognize that the march toward equal protection under the law requires persistent advocacy, rigorous legal strategy, and an unwavering commitment to workers' rights.
