UCF Counselor Education - Former Page This is the official page for the University of Central Florida Counselor Education Program Counselors are proactive "agents of change".

The Counselor Education Program emphasizes a holistic approach to counseling. Counselors assist clients in achieving optimal personal, educational, and vocational development. To facilitate change, an individual must be fully accepted as a person of worth, dignity, and potential. Counseling assists individuals in understanding themselves, making the most of their own qualities and making their own unique contributions to a multicultural society.

Hello all! Next weekend is the Rugged Maniac mud Run and I know several people are racing. My thought is to set a rendezvous point where folks can gather and carpool in order to save money. Let me know if you are interested.

As a reminder, the UCF Counselor Ed Program, Chi Sigma Iota (CSI), and the Orlando Magic have joined forces to promote the fourth annual Mental Health Awareness Night at the Orlando Arena on Saturday, February 10th. The deadline for purchasing tickets is this WEDNESDAY January 31st

What this means to you is the following:

1) Discounted tickets (in blocked seating) for the Magic game on February 10th (game time is 7pm) are being offered to our Program’s students, staff, and faculty (as well as their friends, family, and significant others). We are being offered as many tickets as we want at the discounted rate of $14/ticket (upper bowl, section 203) or $32-35/ticket (lower bowl, section 101 or 102).
a. In order to purchase tickets, simply click on this link: https://groupmatics.events/event/MHAN2018 Determine the number of tickets that you would like to purchase (spouses, partners, friends, kids – all are welcome) and follow the directions to complete the transaction. Remember to get tickets in either Section 101 or 102 (lower bowl) or in Section 203 (in the upper bowl). This offer is for all students, staff, faculty, and guests.
b. The deadline for purchasing tickets is January 31st.

2) CSI is offering a free Professional Development Seminar on the same day February 10th (from 4:30-5:30pm), which is being presented before the game begins at the Arena in the DEX Imaging Suite overlooking the Orlando skyline.
a. The topic will be Me and not Me: The Power of Boundaries and will be presented by Dr. Gulnora Hundley. CSI members, Counselor Ed and School Psych students (and guests), faculty, staff, and others from the community are invited to attend this seminar.
b. Following the presentation, we will continue to congregate in the suite. It’s a sweet suite!
c. There MAY be extra credit opportunities for students who attend (check with your instructors), though that shouldn’t be your primary motivation.

3) During half-time, representatives from our Program will be on the game floor to promote our Program, the Community Counseling and Research Center (CCRC), and the Marriage and Family Research Institute (MFRI) to the Arena audience.

4) The CCRC and the MFRI will be “tabling” in the main foyer of the arena before the game to promote their services to all game attendees.

So, exciting, huh? This is a perfect opportunity to come out, mingle, promote mental health, and see the Magic all at the same time!!

As a reminder, the Counseling Skills Club is meeting today. Here is some info:

Are you interested in developing and/or enhancing your core counseling techniques in a friendly, non-evaluative, and supportive environment? The Counseling Skills Club meets every semester and is open to anyone who is working on developing their counseling skills (typical attendees include those in Techniques, Practicum, and Internship, but all are welcome). These meetings are facilitated by a faculty member and several doctoral students with the aim of helping students to feel more comfortable wearing their “counselor hat.”

The meeting for this semester will be today (November 8th) in Ed 305 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm (facilitated by Mary Perleoni and Saundra Tabet). During this time, Dr. Viki Kelchner will conduct a mock session followed by an extensive process time. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to practice their skills with one another and receive direct feedback from a doctoral student. If you have any questions and/or concerns, please contact Mary Perleoni ([email protected]) or Saundra Tabet ([email protected]).

Dear Counselor Education Students, Faculty, and Staff,

As a reminder, the CAH student group is hosting a Community Outreach Project and would like to invite you to participate. This season’s project is to collect gifts for international distribution to children during the Christmas season. Operation Christmas Child is a world-wide annual initiative that is directed by Samaritan's Purse, an organization whose purpose is to help meet the needs of underserved populations around the world. To inspire a little competitive edge, make sure you read the “be a top donor” note below.

For this project, participants will fill shoeboxes (either actual shoeboxes or plastic boxes with lids of the same size) with various age-and-gender specific gifts. These boxes are then collected at various locations around the country and are shipped out internationally. To participate:

1) Take a look at the attached “How to Pack your Shoebox” document that lists some appropriate items (which includes small toys, school supplies, hygiene items, etc.) that you can include in your shoebox.
2) Then, identify the gender and age that you shoebox is designed for and attach the appropriate label (see the second attachment “OCC Box Labels”).
3) Next, go on-line and help cover the shipping cost of $9 per box (link below). In this way, you can track your box and see where it actually goes. If you’d prefer the old-school method, you are welcome to include a check for $9 (made out to “Samaritan’s Purse” and note “OCC” on the memo line) and place it in your shoebox.
4) Finally, place a rubber band around the box and bring it to our collection site in ED 322 by November 13th.

Visit https://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/ for more information on how this organization helps those most in need around the world.

Be a top donor: In order to add a little competition, I am offering a free pizza party to the class that brings the most shoeboxes (pizza will be delivered to your class). In order to keep count, please put a sticky-note with your name and the name of the class in/on your shoebox. For example, you could write, “Jane Doe, Dr. Shillingford’s Practicum class” or “John Doe (no relation to Jane), Dr. Decker’s Personality Theories class.” I’ll tally the results and then contact the faculty member to arrange for the pizza to be delivered.

If there are any questions about Operation Christmas Child or how you can get more involved, please send an email to [email protected].
