Local and regional artists have one month (deadline July 10) to submit a proposal for an art piece which will grace the inside of Saginaw Valley State University’s new Center for Community Involvement and Experiential Learning.

One able to reproduce on a 6 foot x 15 foot banner at the center, scheduled to open September.

The selected artist will receive a $1000 stipend for fee, time and materials.

The center, located in Gilbertson Hall near the front of SVSU’s campus, is dedicated to strengthening partnerships between SVSU and the communities it serves.

“SVSU has a long and proud tradition of engaging with and serving the communities throughout our region,” said Dawn Hinton, SVSU associate provost.

“Through the relaunched and reimagined Center for Community Engagement and Experiential Learning, we will provide opportunities for SVSU students and faculty to engage more fully with community partners, reaping benefits for all.”

The selected artwork will reflect the spirit of connection between SVSU and the communities it serves. The piece should embody collaboration and partnership, belonging and shared spaces, impact and transformation, and regional identity and pride.

Any 2D media or similar is eligible. All SVSU brand standards for logo use must be followed.

SVSU will coordinate and oversee production and installation of the banner. The banner will become the property of the university; the original artwork will remain the property of the artist.

The competition is open to local and regional artists, including college students and emerging artists. Individual artists or collaborative teams are welcome.

Submission Requirements:
— Artist statement (one page maximum)
— Proposal concept (including how it connects to the center’s vision)
— Visual mock-up or sketches
— Portfolio of past work (3-5 samples)
— Résumé or brief biography

SVSU was pleased to attend the 2026 Heart of the City Awards Banquet as guests and join community leaders in celebrating the individuals and organizations whose exceptional service and volunteerism make a lasting impact throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Representing SVSU at this special event (pictured left to right) were Lex Hallberg, Brian Brunner, Dr. George Grant Jr., Beverly Grant, Dr. Mamie Thorns, David Lewis, and Ken Fettig. We are grateful for the opportunity to support and recognize those who work tirelessly to strengthen the Saginaw community and beyond.

The experience provided tremendous exposure, and our students had the opportunity to compete alongside outstanding institutions while proudly showcasing their talents and Cardinal pride.
