Our students explore communication through radio and television, film, multi-media, journalism, public relations and organizational communication, rhetoric, public address, theatre, and performance. By studying a range of communication models, our students learn not only the appropriate technical skills, but also the informed judgment, moral confidence, and ethical principles that will prepare the

m for a range of careers. Members of the department direct programs in debate, radio, television, journalism, and theatre. Facilities available to students include WJCU-FM radio station, the Marinello Little Theatre, Kulas Auditorium, the Klein Television Studio, and the journalism writing lab.

Dear Alumni,

The Tim Russert Department of Communication has had a tremendous year, but our continued success depends on the support of people like you – our supportive alumni.

We launched Blue Streak Media in the fall semester, an umbrella organization that works to increase the quality, professionalism, scope and entrepreneurial goals of WJCU, The Carroll News, JCU Studios (formerly JC-TV), and PRSSA. Under the leadership of Kyle Hartzell and Jasen Sokol, these programs have taken off. For example:
WJCU is the #1 ranked college radio station in the country (schools with less than 10,000 students), was nominated for 25 national and international awards this year and won 8;

The Carroll News was nominated for numerous national and regional awards this year (still waiting for some results) and earned 9 Best of Student Newspapers Online (SNO) awards;

JCU Studios is growing its entrepreneurial arm and recording campus events and highlight reels. They produced the Day of Giving videos for our department (and several others), and even the university’s official day of giving video which will debut on April 19;

PRSSA has tripled in size from a year ago, has been holding events, going on agency tours, and is becoming the in-house firm for the Tim Russert Department of Communication.

Please consider supporting our efforts. The students make their pitches in the Day of Giving videos, but the bottom line is that they are looking to develop their professional networks, opportunities, and educational insights. You can help them build their futures.
Thank you so much for your interest and your support. Let’s help these amazing young people go forth and set the world on fire.

Sincerely,
Brent Brossmann, Ph.D.
